Overview The Department of Surgery at Macon & Joan Brock Virginia Health Sciences at Old Dominion University is seeking an outstanding Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) to join the team. The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) is responsible for overseeing and assisting with the day-to-day patient care including but not limited to taking vitals, administering meds/treatments, assisting physicians, doing wound care, patient education, documentation, coordinating care, focusing on comfort and supporting quality initiatives, in a fast-paced office. LPN will also assist with training new staff and a point of contact for medical assistants. Responsibilities Triage incoming patients by obtaining vital signs, following standing triage orders, reconcile medication list, reconcile allergies, make sure immunizations are up to date and prepare patients for the visit. Completes delegated tasks from the current and prior day i.e. patient messages, prescription refills, lab results, referrals, home health requests, medication prior authorizations, patient forms, and physician follow-up. All tasks must be reviewed, addressed, and marked appropriately before the closure of each business day. Assist physicians with examinations, minor surgeries, diagnostic procedures and treatments. Provide basic patient care and education as directed by provider and standing orders. Coordinates services with specialists i.e. radiation oncology, pulmonary, endocrinology, nutritional counselling, nephrology, dermatology or social services consultation. Documents all correspondence and interventions in EPIC. Provides patient education and information as instructed by providers and as outlined in the Department’s clinic protocols. Sterilizes equipment and supplies. Filling, faxing and copying as requested. Prepare correspondence/forms/letters etc. as requested by patients and faculty Qualifications Minimum Qualifications and Skills: Licensed in Virginia or hold a valid multistate compact license issued by applicant's primary state of residence. Preferred Qualifications: Previous clinical experience preferred in med-surg, surgery, plastic and/or oncology. Location : Location US-VA-Norfolk

Overview The Department of Family and Community Medicine at Macon & Joan Brock Virginia Health Sciences at Old Dominion University is seeking an outstanding Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) to join the team. (In Virginia only). • Cares for patients receiving oxygen therapy and analyses oxygen concentration of O₂ tents, isolette and croupettes. • Administers respiratory treatments (I.P.P.B.). • Applies sterile and unsterile compresses and bandages of all types and styles. • Answers call lights, assists patients with personal hygiene and other activities of daily living. • Tests urine for sugar, acetone, and ph., weighs patients, and takes vital signs. • Cares for patients in isolation. • Assists with physical and vaginal examinations and obtaining pap smears. • Administers post-operative regime: cough, deep breathing, turn patients, and takes vital signs. • Prepares patients for surgery, including pre-op check lists. • Applies ace bandages, all types of traction, hot water bottle and ice cap. • Measures and records intake and output. • Collects specimens; blood, urine, stool and sputum. • Administers post-mortuum care and transportation. • Administers enemas: retention, cleansing, therapeutic, colonic, irrigation. • Maintains cleanliness, safety and efficiency in nursing. • Alert to and able to respond appropriately in an emergency situation, providing patient care, initiating CPR and any other tasks designated by the RN or MD. • Assists with the care and security of the patients' valuables. • Checks narcotics and barbiturates, reports discrepancies, completes incident report appropriately and submits to appropriate management. • Cares for patients with radium and assists physician with removal of radium. • Prepares used equipment for re-sterilization. • Cleans and maintains storage of equipment. • Requests repairs and follows up with physician and other staff as appropriate regarding equipment performance. • Complies with hospital policies for obtaining, documenting and follow through on telephone and verbal orders. • Monitors glucose via glucose monitor machine. • Collects Quality Improvement data as requested. • Uses universal precautions. • Performs other related duties as assigned. Qualifications Education • Graduate of an accredited school of practical nursing. Overview LPNs take care of patients that have long term treatment needs. Often, these patients do not have a safe discharge plan to complete the treatment elsewhere and therefore continue to have a bed in the hospital. LPNs could have the opportunity to have hands on experience with wound care and IV antibiotics, among other long term care treatment. LPNs may often work beside acute care RNs but not directly in acute patient care areas. They work in collaboration with a C.N.A., charge RN, unit coordinator and physician.
