Advanced Practice Provider - (Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant)

Overview Advanced Practice Providers (APP), a nurse practitioner (NP) or a physician assistant (PA), who will be responsible for providing general medical care and treatment of participants enrolled in clinical trials in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Macon & Joan Brock Virginia Health Sciences. Position functions as an independent provider primarily coordinating gynecologic and obstetric care in women enrolled in clinical trials. This professional will work with the research staff on protocol review, study activities, and review and follow-up of diagnostic and laboratory tests. Responsibilities Performs physical examinations, protocol procedures (for example endometrial biopsies, cervico­ vaginal biopsies) and preventive health measures within prescribed guidelines and instructions of a physician. These measures include but are not limited to health maintenance, pelvic exams, PAP smears, education and counseling. Perform an individualized assessment of the research participants. Document physical findings in study source documents and or case report forms. Work with research coordinators and staff to troubleshoot daily study issues, and respond to sponsor queries and deadlines. Some research participants may need to be seen on weekends and or holidays. Prescribes or recommends drugs in accordance with state laws, or other forms of treatment such as physical therapy, inhalation therapy or related therapeutic procedures. Orders, interprets and evaluates diagnostic tests to identify and assess patient's clinical problems and health care needs. Provides diagnosis and treatment of common acute illnesses within prescribed guidelines and instructions of a physician, as well as education, counseling and crisis intervention as they relate to acute care. Records all pertinent patient information in the Electronic Medical Record (EMR), study source documents or case report forms. Discusses case with physician and other health professionals to prepare comprehensive patient care plan. Submits health care plan and goals of individual patients for periodic review and evaluation by the physician. Refers patient to physician for consultation or to specialized health resources for treatment. Qualifications Nurse Practitioner’s must have MSN and must be a licensed RN by the Virginia Board of Nursing and a certified Nurse Practitioner. Physician Assistant must have an MPA. Must be a licensed Physician Assistant within the Commonwealth of Virginia. Experience as a Nurse Practitioner or a Physician Assistant with women's health is preferred, but not required. Overview Functions as a physician assistant in the Division of Infectious Diseases, Department of Medicine, Clinical serves to be provided in the following locations/settings: Provide inpatient care as directed by the attending physician. This will include off hours and weekend calls scheduled by rotation with attending physicians. Outpatient services at EVMS Infectious disease clinics and at various Public Health Departments in the service area, and Lake Taylor Transitional Care Hospital. Responsibilities Responsibilities include: Independently assess, diagnose, & develop treatment plans for patients in the area of Infectious Diseases in accordance with protocols and standards of care. Elicits and records a comprehensive and accurate past medical and social history and review of systems for ID and HIV patients. Performs appropriate physical exams and health maintenance, to establish a treatment plan and follow-up care including any need for referrals, physician intervention, or hospitalization. Differentiates between normal and abnormal findings and orders appropriate diagnostic studies. Prescribe, dispense or deliver medications under the practice agreement. Maintains effective communication with physicians and providers regarding individual patient care to develop a coordinated comprehensive care plan on cases involving complex medical or psychosocial issues. Assess learning needs, readiness, and capabilities of individuals and families to tailor education to meet the needs of the individual. Counsels’ patients and their families, when necessary, in areas such as health maintenance, medication adjustments and end of life issues. Maintains strict confidentiality of patient information in accordance with HIPAA and handles all matters professionally with sensitivity to racial, ethnic, and sexual orientation issues. Maintain effective working relationships with faculty, staff, residents and the public. Participate in development and implementation of divisional and departmental quality assessment/improvement/research programs and processes as requested. Contribute toward the achievement of divisional and departmental goals. Participate and contribute in/toward activities that enhance clinical expertise. Participate in professional clinical activities in the division as scheduled, community and professional organizations as needed. Performs other duties as assigned. Qualifications MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Masters in Physician Assistant or Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (concentration in chronic health and/or primary care preferred). Experience with patients with various types of Infectious Diseases preferred. Must have appropriate state of Virginia licensure to perform expected duties. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Ability to develop and maintain effective relationships with public, partners, customers, and co-workers; while working cooperatively and effectively with others to achieve common goals. Ability to manage time and resources to ensure assignments are completed accurately and deadlines are met. Meets attendance/punctuality requirements. Ability to adapt to changing work environments, work priorities, and organizational needs. Takes independent action to address and resolve problems. Ability to express ideas effectively and demonstrate sound judgment with regard to decision-making.
