Job Description UW Medical Center - Montlake has an outstanding opportunity for a full time (100% FTE, 40 hours per week), evenings and some night shifts ASSISTANT NURSE MANAGER (Registered Nurse 3) to join the Medical Oncology ICU. The Assistant Nurse Manager will provide direct nursing care, train and manage staff, spearhead quality improvement initiatives, and ensure safe patient care practices. This is a 24-bed unit. Patient population on this unit includes medical ICU cases and Bone Marrow Transplant. Primary Job Responsibilities Assists the nurse manager in the recruitment and staff selection process for Medical Oncology ICU Team employees (primarily ICU RNs and other roles/positions/job classes ad hoc) Collaborates with Staff Development liaison and Critical Care educator(s)/CNSs to develop individualized orientation action plans for new employees. Coordinates orientation schedule for new staff including selection of appropriate units, and assignment of shifts. Assists with planning and implementation of continuing education programs for ICU Team staff. Designs and coordinates annual competency reviews for RN staff. Provides feedback and guidance to staff; observes and reviews staff performance. Identifies the individual capabilities of staff; provides counseling, instruction, or additional experience as needed; and consults with the nurse manager if further action is indicated. Contributes to quality and safety practices and required compliance measures. Implements principles of high reliability to identify and avoid high risk behaviors to provide a safe environment for patients. Escalates potential safety hazards or gaps from best practice following institutional chain of command protocol. Utilizes institutional information technology by documenting nursing practice to support quality and performance improvement initiatives. Operations Performs charge nurse duties as assigned. Coordinates with the Clinical Coordinator/Clinical Nurse Manager/Assistant Nurse Manager/Nursing Administrator to ensure supplies are appropriately utilized and inventory is sufficient for patient care. Escalates material or staffing resource deficits to charge nurse, Clinical Nurse Manager/Assistant Nurse Manager or Nursing Administrator. Demonstrates patient focused and cost-effective approaches to patient care in terms of equipment, staff, supplies and all other resources. Documents in an accurate and thorough manner in compliance with hospital, regulatory and legal requirements and standards of care. Facilitates patient throughput on a shift basis. Advances clinical competence in nursing practice to progress from novice to expert.
