GENERAL PURPOSE: Certified Medical Assistants are multi-skilled practitioners who provide medical support services to the providers as part of a care team in order to ensure a smooth flow of patients through the medical clinic, and are viewed by physicians as vital partners in increasing medical office productivity. MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES: 1) Assists patients calling and visiting the clinic a. Calls and escorts patients to exam area timely to promote continual flow of patients b. Obtains vital signs, height and weight and documents in Electronic Health Record (EHR) per policy and procedure c. Makes referral appointments and maintains referral tracking in the EHR. d. Initiates Care Plans and updates in EHR per Patient Centered Medical Home (PCMH) b. Prepare and administer medications as ordered by the clinician c. Initiates prescriptions orders or drug refills upon review and approval of the overseeing clinician and calls in routine refill prescriptions that are “exact” meaning having no changes in the dosage levels to a pharmacy d. Under the direction of the clinician may enter medication, laboratory and radiology orders into the Electronic Medical Record e. Transmit patient education information that has been approved by the clinician f. Administer immunizations and performs standing orders per protocol g. Utilizes appropriate technique in administering injections 3) Under the direct clinical direction of the Nursing Supervisor, assists with other medical services a. Follows infection control per Clinical Policy and Procedure guidelines b. Records timely in EHR per the corporation’s policy and procedure c. Initiates Advanced Directives and updates as appropriate per policy and procedure for PCMH d. Cleans, autoclaves, and sterilizes instruments, equipment, etc., used in clinic e. Performs control tests of certain laboratory equipment f. Prepares and stocks exam rooms g. Enters patient data into clinic tracking system h. Maintains professional growth by attending all meetings and in-service trainings i. Participates in Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) activities and staff meetings j. Treats all clients, staff and the community with respect and courtesy k. Utilizes effective means to resolve conflict l. Utilizes effective verbal and written communication skills m. Essential Functions: Clinical Duties (may include, but not limited to): Taking medical histories - documenting completely and accurately in the EMR Preparing patients for examinations and as needed assisting the medical provider during examinations Collecting and preparing laboratory specimens including urine, swabs, blood, or other as required Performing basic in-office procedures such as ear cleanings or other minor clinical procedures at the direction of the medical providers Performing basic Point of Care testing such as finger stick and urine dip Providing education and instruction to the patient based on the medical provider's assessment and plan. Preparing and administering medications/vaccines/immunizations, including intramuscular, intradermal, and subcutaneous injections—as directed by a physician or other licensed provider (e.g., a nurse practitioner or physician assistant) Performing EKG/ECG Administrative Duties (may include, but not limited to): Using computer applications and Electronic Medical Record Answering telephones and calling patients with results or other clinical information designated by the provider Occ Health Essential Functions/Position Specific Duties Knowledge and understanding of state and federal laws related to Worker’s Compensation (BWC), Federal Motor Carrier (FMCSA aka DOT) guidelines, OSHA workplace compliance, and any governmental compliance programs directing Occupational Health policies and procedures. Conduct physical exams, BWC visits, drug and alcohol testing, respirator fit tests, vision tests, hearing tests, blood draws, Spirometry tests, Tb screenings, vaccinations, and any other required services performed through our Occupational Health Program Able to schedule physical exams, BWC appointments, drug screens, or any other service provided by Occupational Health as needed. Medication/vaccine inventory and Supply management including ordering, maintaining stocking levels, stock rotation. Ordering and receiving vaccines and medications, and maintains monthly vaccine inventory and waste logs for the multiple locations. Communicates effectively with client company representatives & their employees, fellow staff members, physicians/medical professionals, and other internal and external parties. Maintain required clinical logs for monthly inspections, documentation of calibrations, employee certifications, compliance reports, and any clinical documentation to maintain compliance with BWC, FMCSA, DOT and OSHA requirements as well as FTMC policies. Oversee the on-hand supply of Chain-of-Custody Forms, Breath Alcohol Forms, and testing supplies at multiple Occupational Health Clinic as well as the FTMC Lab/ER, and our Willard location.
