Nurse Extern positions are for students that have completed their RN program. Position Summary: Under the direct supervision of the Registered Nurse, provides direct and indirect patient care in accordance with established policies, procedures, and guidelines. Assesses, implements, plans and evaluates care utilizing the nursing process. Performs a variety of simple and complex tasks and procedures. Reports changes in patient condition to the Registered Nurse. Nurse Extern (NE) must provide proof of graduation within 30 days of the date of hire or effective date of transfer to NE role for internal candidates. Proof can be in the form of, Authorization to test NCLEX (RN National Council Licensing Exam) provided by the Michigan Bureau of Health Professions. Certified college transcripts conferring graduation. A personalized letter on the college’s nursing school letterhead with appropriate signature, confirming fulfillment of graduation requirements. Nurse Extern (NE) must provide written confirmation of NCLEX testing date(s) to Human Resources. Achieve Michigan RN licensure within 90 days of hire and provide proof to Human Resources and Manager, Patient Care Services. Nurse Extern must be electronically notified of their testing results. If unsuccessful in obtaining Michigan Licensure upon first attempt, NE will retest a minimum of 45 days after administration of the first exam, per the NCSBN policy. If NE is unable to successfully complete the nursing licensure exam after two attempts the NE will be removed from the NE position and placed in a Nurse Assistant position within 7 days or employment will be terminated. NE will move into an open Registered Nurse position the first full pay period following RN license date. This will also be the date of the new hourly pay rate and status change.
