Patients commonly treated include those with sepsis and septic shock, hypertensive emergencies requiring IV therapy, acute respiratory failure (invasive and non‑invasive ventilation), ARDS , and patients requiring prone therapy . The unit also manages status epilepticus, hypotension, gastrointestinal bleeding (including use of rapid infusers and massive transfusion protocols), DIC , intentional and unintentional overdoses , cardiac arrest patients (with or without targeted temperature management), and acute or chronic renal failure requiring HD, PD, or CRRT . Post‑operative patients needing enhanced monitoring are also frequently admitted. Nurses care for patients with a wide range of invasive monitoring and access , including PA catheters, central venous catheters, arterial lines, PICC lines, bladder pressure monitoring , and are responsible for the titration of vasoactive medications . Staffing Model Nurse‑to‑patient ratios are acuity‑based , typically 1:3 or 1:2 , with the ability to flex to 1:1 or 2:1 when clinically indicated. All admissions to the IMC require approval by the Intensivist or designated Advanced Practice Clinician (APC) . Skills Physical and cognitive requirements: Position’s physical requirements necessitate a full range of body motion including but not limited to, physically assisting patients, requiring stretching, bending, lifting, sitting, kneeling, stooping, standing, walking, pushing and pulling. Position is classified according to the USDOL as Very Heavy Work which is defined as exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. The National Institute of Safety and Health (NIOSH0 guidelines, which recommends that the average worker not lift more than 51 pounds without assistance, will be followed.
