Overview This position is responsible for the daily work and work flow within the Surgical Care Unit (SCU). The Clinical Coordinator/SCU Charge RN supervises the nursing staff in coordinating schedules, nursing assignments and patient care in the preoperative and postoperative phases of surgery from preadmission through discharge. Responsibilities Daily staffing: Assigns nursing staff according to caseload, types of surgery cases, and staffing needs in accordance with Title 22. Responsible for overseeing the maintenance, restocking as needed, and outdates for crash cart, Malignant Hyperthermia carts, and Broselow carts Surgery daily flow: Leads and coordinates the inflow and outflow of patients; watches for delays of surgery and communicates to team and patient/family, as needed. Must maintain sight of the 'big picture' each day and make adjustments to room and nurse assignments as necessary. Keeps staff informed throughout day and conducts a daily huddle as needed to review the day and challenges. Communicates with anesthesiologists and surgeons concerning timing, delays, and any changes to the daily schedule. Job Requirements Education and Work Experience: Bachelor's Degree in Nursing (BSN): Preferred Oncology nurse experience in a radiation department: Preferred Licenses/Certifications Registered Nurse (RN) licensure in the state of practice: Required Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) or Basic Life Support (BLS OR HS-BLS OR RQIBLS) certification: Required Facility Specific License/Certifications AHA-BLS or ARC-BLS: Required Oncology Nursing Certification (ONC) or Chemotherapy Immunotherapy (CHIM) or ONC/ONCC-CHIM: Required Essential Functions Conducts baseline assessment and nursing history of outpatients receiving radiation therapy including vital signs, pain assessment and medication history. Utilizes Oncology Nursing Society (ONS) guidelines in documentation. Assesses patients for fall risk, allergies and communicates to physicians and team. Conducts weekly assessment of patients for signs and symptoms of side effects from radiation therapy. Prepares charts for initial assessments and follow up visits to radiation therapy department. Communicates pertinent changes to physician. Assists physicians with all procedures performed in radiation therapy department including Stereotactic Radiosurgery (SRS), High Dose Rate (HDR) Brachytherapy, and examinations. Prepares exam room for patient. Takes vital signs and assists physician with procedures. Cleans and maintains instruments used in procedures. Performs blood draws in department; starts intravenous therapy for the administration of intravenous contrast; administers medication in department as ordered by physician. Administers oxygen when necessary. Acts as a mediator and resource in the department in regards to transportation, scheduling and pertinent medical issues between the patients and the radiation therapists.
