Responsibilities The Assistant Nurse Manager (ANM) for Community Health System (CHS) ensures the highest standards of evidence-based patient care while fostering a positive working environment for nursing staff. This position manages unit operations and supports the development of the nursing staff. By combining advanced clinical expertise and leadership skills, the Assistant Nurse Manager provides essential administrative and clinical support to Nurse Managers and unit staff, contributing significantly to delivering high-quality nursing services, excellence in nursing practice, and safe patient outcomes. Accountabilities 1. Hire, supervise, and assist in training and mentoring nursing staff while ensuring adherence to departmental goals and operational standards.2. Conduct performance evaluations, provide feedback, and recommend corrective actions; mentor and coach staff to implement professional development plans and enhance clinical skills.3. Facilitate communication and coordination among unit staff and other departments to ensure continuity of patient care. Oversee patient admissions, discharges, and transfers, ensuring accurate and pertinent information is transferred between shifts.4. Develop and implement unit policies and procedures to enhance healthcare delivery.6. Support budget management by optimal use of nursing resources and balancing quality of care with cost efficiency.8. Participate in quality improvement projects and research initiatives.9. In collaboration with the nurse manager, address operational issues affecting patient care delivery and facilitate training programs for compliance with clinical standards and new technologies.10. Serve as a liaison between the Nurse Manager and staff, promoting open communication, escalation, and collaboration with other departments (e.g., pharmacy, radiology) to resolve operational issues.11. Description The Nurse Manager (NM) is responsible for the management of nursing practice and operations on a designated unit/service setting such as inpatient, procedural, emergency department or ambulatory care. This includes, but is not limited to, the management of: clinical nursing practice, staff recruitment, retention, labor relations, supply chain and budget, staffing, employee performance evaluation, quality improvement, staff education, medical records, internal and external regulatory and survey requirements. The Nurse Manager collaborates with multiple professionals to support and coordinate the provision / management of patient care. This individual works closely with the Nursing Clinical Director, unit Dyad partner and staff in insuring that the Service/Unit setting maintains the highest standards of patient care and is responsive to the needs of the patient & family as well as the organization. Responsibilities Patient Care Leads nursing practice using the tenets of the Professional Practice Model of Relationship Centered Care and the Care Delivery Model of Modified Primary Nursing for the promotion of the patient experience. Monitors institutional information technology infrastructure and corrects gaps in clinical nursing documentation. Leads staff participation in quality and safety initiatives and mandated compliance measures. Demonstrates accountability for all unit quality and safety practices and compliance, and ensures required evaluation of staff competencies is maintained. Operations and administration Supports implementation of the mission, vision, goals and objectives of the department, throughout the clinical service and individual patient care units. Provides administrative and clinical oversight to ensure that all activity (staffing, support services, inter disciplinary collaboration, resources and financial viability) supports the goals of the organization. Works collaboratively with physician dyads and all members of the healthcare team to promote patient care and regulatory standards. Prioritizes recruitment and retention strategies in accordance with system and local hospital retention goals. Maintains a nursing unit in compliance with all regulatory agency mandates, including the regulations of NYS DOH and The Joint Commission. Oversees 24 hour patient care delivery, throughput, staffing and processes to ensure efficient and effective operations in all clinical specialties. Implements and monitors unit salary and supply budgets, including capital equipment allocation, budget variances, management of OT and vacancies according to MSHS financial goals. Monitors availability and maintenance of nursing equipment and supplies Maintains position control of established positions and manages the recruitment and retention of qualified staff. Maintains patient/employee confidentiality in the management of information. Evaluates nursing staff performance and mentors, coaches, counsels and disciplines staff as needed. Evaluates all newly hired/transferred staff and participates in the decision about passing the probationary period. Participates in the ongoing and completes the annual performance appraisals for all staff. Completes performance improvement plans of employees as needed and shares feedback with the Associate Directors/Directors and Senior Directors accordingly. Interprets and implements the associated collective bargaining agreements and System and Hospital policies and procedures. Performs disciplinary actions as necessary with collaboration with Nursing and Labor Relations. Acts as a management witness in disciplinary activities. Insures all staff have met their orientation goals/weekly progress reports and annual competency requirements and participates in the Competency Planning Tool for unit/service. Conducts regular staff meetings to ensure communication with staff about progress, changes and compliance with all hospital policies and procedures. Maintains records of minutes for staff team meetings. Encourages, recognizes and rewards staff participation in quality and safety initiatives, compliance and successes.
