Kapi'olani Medical Center for Women & Children is Hawai'i’s only maternity, newborn and pediatric specialty hospital. It is well recognized as Hawai'i’s leader in the care of women, infants and children. With 253 beds, the not-for-profit hospital delivers 6,000 babies a year, and is also a medical teaching and research facility. At Kapi‘olani Medical Center for Women & Children, the Newborn Special Care Unit provides continuous care to newborns of up to three months, including meeting the complex psychosocial needs of both the child and their family. Nursing and medical support staff in the NSCU work with the Neonatology team to care for premature babies and newborns requiring special care. Support and education are delivered to patients and family in an atmosphere that promotes bonding of the family unit. The RN administers culturally sensitive nursing care to assigned patients in accordance with ANA standards, the New Jersey Practice Act, The Joint Commission, professional standards, and established hospital and Nursing Department policies and procedures, all grounded in evidence-based nursing practice. The RN utilizes the Nursing Process to provide patient-centered care and evaluates the effectiveness of nursing interventions through analysis of nurse-sensitive indicators and patient outcomes.
