Unit Bio The Special Care Unit is an 8-bed ICU/Step-Down Unit, where nurses are responsible for conducting complex assessments and providing intensive therapies and interventions to a variety of patients. Nurses have the opportunity to care for patients with acute and chronic respiratory failure, cardiac events, sepsis, metabolic disorders, complex surgical recoveries, and more. This department has a great collaborative team with the ancillary departments and the physicians/surgeons. The MH Registered Nurse - Acute Care role provides high quality patient care through assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of patient outcomes. Collaborates, delegates, and communicates with members of the healthcare team to ensure optimal care. MH RN II: This level is competent in their clinical role and has demonstrated the ability to care for most patients assigned. Though not able to care for every patient type within their area of hire, demonstrates how to obtain the appropriate resources to develop required skills and knowledge over time. This level includes automatic advancement after 1 year as a RN I – must be in good standing and meets RN I requirements. Required Minimum Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities (KSAs) Education: Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing required; BSN preferred. Licensure/Certification: Current applicable state(s) license as a Registered Professional Nurse required. Current BLS certification required or must obtain within 30 days of start date. ICU, SCU, ED and PACU RN’s require ACLS and PALS Certifications within one year of start date or in accordance with Department guidelines. Description As an integral part of the clinical care team, the Patient Care Associate is responsible for patient care and support activities promoting patient focused care within the Specialty Service. The Patient Care Associate supports the registered nurse in patient care activities, such as: assisting patient with activities of daily living, collecting specimens and performing procedures; maintaining a safe, clean environment; and other duties as needed. Responsibilities A. Clinical/Technical/Service • Demonstrates the ability to perform clinical/technical/service/administrative tasks • Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care, based on physical, psychosocial, educational, safety, and related criteria, appropriate to the age of the patients served in assigned area. • Performs and records patient’s vital signs, such as blood pressure, pulse, temperature and respirations. Assists patient with ambulation and all levels of mobilization. • Assists with dietary functions, including delivering and collecting patient trays at bedside, passing menus to patients and assisting them with menu completion, mixing nutritional supplements, reporting variation in eating patterns to RN/Dietitian, and maintaining accurate and timely systems for transmission of patient dietary orders and changes • Maintains a safe, clean and functional environment, including ensuring for the comfortable Movement of the patient. Assists the patient in room maintenance, such as bed-stripping and trash removed, when necessary • Performs on-to-one observation or close observation status of patients, e.g. safety, elopement risk, or suicide prevention. • Maintains “isolation status” for patients under direction of an RN and according to set procedures • Performs scheduled hourly care checks/ rounding on patients with emphasis on caring for toileting needs, comfort, and positioning and pain awareness.
