As a Surgical Technologist I, you will be involved in process improvement or quality initiatives related to, but outside of, Perioperative Services. You will assist the nursing and medical staff in providing care to patients undergoing surgical intervention and performance of surgical scrub technologist duties; collaborates with nursing and other disciplines, when necessary, to revise the plan of care to meet the changing needs of the patient. Has constant contact with the Operating Room staff, physicians, clerical staff, anesthesia staff and materials management. Essential Job Functions: Independently performs surgical scrub role on the operative field and is able to scrub in all services, adult and pediatric. Applies knowledge related to emergency and trauma situations and surgical procedures in the operating room. Demonstrates infection control practices by utilizing proper aseptic technique while dealing with blood/body fluid. Correctly uses all sterilizers and high level disinfectors related to surgical procedures; documents appropriately and maintains competencies, as required. In conjunction with Specialty Manager, Charge Nurse and Central Sterile Processing, demonstrates organizational skills in case preparation, case cart picking and accurate room set-up for instrument and tray contents in scheduled cases. University of Iowa Health Care - Medical Center North Liberty department of Operating Rooms is looking for a Surgical Technologists who is under the direction of Staff Nurses, assists with surgical procedures, the provision of therapeutic, preventive and emergency patient care duties. Prepares, operates and maintains routine and complex equipment, instruments, supplies and implants. Characteristic Duties And Responsibilities Prepares surgical area for patient care and anticipates the needs of the surgical team. Applies knowledge related to emergency situations and surgical procedures in the operating room. Demonstrates understanding of principles of medical and surgical asepsis; recognizes and communicates breaks in aseptic technique. Provides for proper care and handling of equipment, instruments, supplies and implants (E/I/S/I). Demonstrates knowledge of various surgical equipment and advanced surgical instrumentation. Demonstrates competency in performance of delegated technical functions and clinical activities, in accordance with institutional policies. Assists with the provision of patient care with regard to the patient's condition and age. Exhibits high level of collaboration with peers in making decisions related to surgical patient care. Demonstrates critical thinking skills in relations to anticipating the needs of the patient and surgeon. Implements measures to prevent potential patient problems/complications and reports unusual incidents. Assists with documentation according to department/division standard under the direction of the Registered Nurse. Performs computer functions within scope of role as defined by the individual unit. Serves as primary preceptor to orient new staff and/or student technologists to scrubbing duties. Serves as a mentor and positive role model to new employees and other surgical team members. Practices standard precautions in infection control in accordance with institutional policy. Follows changes in patient care protocol based on research findings. Participates in and contributes to unit staff meetings and in-service programs. May participate in perioperative initiatives or shared governance committees. Performs other special projects and tasks as assigned. Schedule: 75%-100% Hourly : $23.30 to commensurate Hours: 10 hour rotating shifts between the hours of 0645-1715, primarily M-F, rotating day off, weekly extension of shift, occasional weekends and holidays as needed.
