The Surgical Technologist II acts as a member of the surgical team providing patient care to the patients undergoing surgical procedures in all areas, including a variety of complex procedures, by assisting the surgeon with instrumentation. Under some supervision, prepares the appropriate instrumentation and materials for use during and on the surgical field, passing instruments, assisting with room turnover, and performs other scrub duties as directed. Provides information related to care/preparation of surgical instruments/equipment for sterilization/disinfection procedures. Performs the necessary surgical counts on sharps, small items, instruments and sponges with the circulating nurse prior to opening, during, and after closing the incision. Prepares the surgical field by opening correct supplies and preparing instruments and equipment needed for the scheduled case. Assures all materials are available and in working order and verifies own skill in using equipment correctly. Provides indirect patient care activities such as patient transportation. Assist with standard work and cleaning at completion of procedure. Maintains aseptic technique; actively monitors situations that could lead to a breach in aseptic technique. Communicates and immediately corrects breaks in aseptic technique. Ensures that equipment is functioning properly and immediately notifies appropriate personnel of any problems. Tests equipment prior to use on field. Adheres to the LPCHS unit policies regarding equipment maintenance. Assists with restraining uncooperative/combative patient in a safe manner. Set the standard for sterile and non-sterile suite preparation and supply management. Anticipate surgeon needs by delivering instruments and supplies with speed and accuracy. Prioritize patient safety by managing the sterile field and conducting precise instrument counts. Provide essential clinical support during patient transport, draping, and intraoperative hemostasis. Job Summary: A nticipates the needs of the surgical team. Establishes and maintains sterile field during surgical procedures in the operating room. Job Title: Scrub Technician Reporting Relationship: Reports to the Clinical Director. Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities: Include the following. Other duties may be assigned: 1. Efficiently and effectively assists physician with operative procedures · Anticipates surgeon/physician’s needs both in preparing for procedures and during procedure · Demonstrates knowledge of specific responsibilities in all emergency situations. 2. Ensures sterility of all supplies and instruments during set up of surgical procedures. 3. Handles instruments in a manner which prolongs “life” of instrument. 4. Assists circulating nurse and surgical team in maintaining sterile environment. 5. Assists circulating nurse in gathering necessary surgical supplies and equipment. Is responsible for doing sponge, needle, and instrument count pre-operatively and intra-operative with the circulating nurse. 6. Gowns and gloves surgeons and assistants. 7. Assists in keeping physician preference cards accurate/updated. 8. Retains all specimens to be sent to pathology, confirming source/name of specimen with surgeon. 9. Transports all surgical equipment to appropriate cleaning areas. Assists in sterile supply with cleaning and reprocessing of instrument sets. 10. Interacts appropriately and effectively with all patients/others regardless of age or ethnic background. 11. Uses Standard Universal Precautions, appropriate hand hygiene, personal protective equipment, and safe practices to ensure personal safety and a safe environment. 12. Assists with environmental hazard and infection control surveillance and participates in emergency preparedness drills. 13. Follows all equipment and safety guidelines and is responsible for knowledgeable use and care of equipment. 14. Serves as a resource to other members of the health care team. 15. Attends in services, conferences, and meetings as required. 16. Communicates effectively and courteously with visitors, physicians, and their office staffs, patients, and employees. Maintains patient, physician, and employee privacy and confidentiality per policy. 17. Maintains designated certifications such as CPR, as offered by the center. 18.
