Job Description

Under general nursing and medical direction, utilizing standardized procedures, the Nurse Practitioner functions within an organized system for the delivery of health care in association with other members of the multidisciplinary health care team and performs specialized nurse practitioner duties in clinical settings.

The essential functions include, but are not limited to:

  • Provides routine preventative and continuity of care to adult and/or pediatric patients; this may include complete history and physical examinations.
  • Orders diagnostic tests, which may include laboratory tests, X-rays and other imaging, E.K.G.’s, and other disease or condition specific diagnostic tests.
  • Identifies and manages patients with unstable chronic diseases appropriate to clinical specialty.
  • Provides urgent care to acutely ill patients.
  • Acute care planning for patients in an inpatient setting.
  • Assesses and diagnosis, develops treatment plans, and furnishes medications.
  • Counsels and educates patients, and collaborates with healthcare team.
  • Consults with physicians on the diagnosis and treatment of unstable and complex patient conditions.
  • Documents medical records and adheres to patient privacy.
  • Participates in staff meetings and conferences regarding patient care, as well as quality improvement/control activities.

The 2328 Nurse Practitioner (All Specialties) may perform other duties as assigned/required.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  1. LICENSE*: Possession of a valid California Nurse Practitioner (NP) license issued by the California Board of Registered Nursing; AND 
  2. LICENSE*: Possession of a current medication furnishing license issued by the California Board of Registered Nursing; AND
  3. CERTIFICATION: Possession of national board certification, or eligibility, as a Nurse Practitioner issued by one of the following recognized national certifying body or organization:

SOME POSITIONS HAVE ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

CERTIFICATES/LICENSES

  • Possession of a valid Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) Certificate issued by the American Heart Association. 
  • Specialization as a Family NP, Adult NP, Adult Gerontology NP, Women’s Health, Acute Care NP, Pediatric NP or Psychiatric Mental Health NP.
  • The ability to obtain Security Clearance from the San Francisco Sheriff’s Department.
  • Possession of a Furnishing and dispensing number (or ability to pass the credential process within 90 days of hire).
  • Certified as a Medical Examiner by The U.S. Department of Transportation Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration National Registry of Certified Medical Examiners.

EXPERIENCE

  • Six (6) months (equivalent to 1,000 hours) of work experience as a Health Care provider treating patients in a long-term care facility, skilled nursing facility, or other acute long term care setting.
  • Minimum of six (6) months (equivalent to 1,000 hours) of Occupational Health experience.
  • One (1) year (equivalent to 2,000 hours) of experience as a Registered Nurse on a psychiatric inpatient unit, psychiatric emergency service clinic or mental health center.
  • One (1) year (equivalent to 2,000 hours) of experience in a setting that treats HIV, AIDS, and Sexually Transmitted Infections.

One-year full-time employment is equivalent to 2,000 hours (2,000 hours of qualifying work experience is based on a 40-hour work week).

Selection Procedures

Training and Experience Evaluation (Weight: 100%): Candidates are required to complete a Training and Experience Evaluation Supplemental Questionnaire at https://forms.gle/ED1WJYbFJjtHoiui6. This evaluation is designed to measure knowledge, skills and/or abilities in job related areas which may include but not be limited to: Knowledge of role and scope of practice of the Nurse Practitioner, of health treatments, maintenance and promotion, of health care resources and systems; Ability to assess, diagnose and develop treatment plans, to serve vulnerable populations; Collaborative ability; Oral communication ability; and Written communication ability.

Candidates must achieve a passing score on the Training and Experience Evaluation to continue in the selection process and will be placed on the confidential eligible list in rank order according to their final score.

Certification
The certification rule for the eligible list resulting from this examination will be the Rule of List.

Eligible List/Score Report
A confidential eligible list of applicant names that have passed the civil service examination process will be created and used for certification purposes only. An examination score report will be established, so applicants can view the ranks, final scores and number of eligible candidates. Applicant information, including names of applicants on the eligible list, shall not be made public unless required by law. However, an eligible list shall be made available for public inspection, upon request, once the eligible list is exhausted or expired and referrals resolved.
