Job Summary Follows the nursing process for patients admitted to same day surgery for endoscopy, OR, IV therapy, minor surgery, or IR procedures; communicates with surgeon, endoscopist, interventional radiologist, anesthesia care provider, any other physician or PA; provides report to OR RN, endoscopy nurse, or IR nurse and anesthesia care provider about patient’s relevant patient medical/surgical history and medication allergies; assists patient recovery in Phase 2; accurately documents and charges patient; includes family in patient care and education when possible. Has working knowledge of monitoring patient’s vital signs and taking appropriate actions based on the results and airway management. Essential Functions Ensuring a high standard of nursing care to patients attending the Endoscopy Unit, working within company policies and procedures. Providing technical assistance during diagnostic and therapeutic Endoscopic procedures, ensuring safe working practice. Setting, monitoring and maintaining excellent standards of nursing care. Maintaining personal contact with patients and relatives, being sensitive to their needs for courtesy, dignity and privacy and ensuring a friendly environment at all times. Maintaining timely and accurate nursing records and ensuring that confidentiality is respected. Storing, checking and administering drugs in accordance with established standards and guidelines Working with minimal supervision during endoscopic procedures, admission and recovery of patients and other related procedures Contributing to the local resolution, investigation and follow up action of any informal or formal complaints. Participating in the care and maintenance of endoscopes and other specialized equipment, ensuring an agreed standard of decontamination at all times including accurate records of traceability of all endoscopes and associated equipment. Ensuring the safe discharge of all patients from the Endoscopy unit. Description The Medical Assistant I provides clinical office support to the supervising physician and performs patient care and administrative duties necessary to deliver quality patient care. Responsibilities 1. Fulfills patient care responsibilities as assigned which may include: checking schedules and organizing patient flow; accompanying patients to exam/procedure room, assisting patients as needed with walking, transferring, dressing, collecting and processing specimens and point of care testing, preparing for exam, etc. Assists physicians with various procedures, takes vital signs, relays instructions to patients and or families; answers calls and provides pertinent information. 2. Fulfills clerical responsibilities as assigned which may include: sending and receiving patient medical records; obtaining lab/x-ray reports, hospital notes, referral information, etc. Completing forms and requisitions as needed, managing charts to ensure information is completed and filed appropriately. Job Description The Department of Radiology at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University is seeking an hourly/per diem Nursing Assistant 2. Distinguishing Characteristics Nursing Assistants provide care to individuals in hospitals and long-term care facilities operated by New York State. Care ranges from attending to patients’ personal hygiene needs, to performing a limited number of simple treatments and therapies under direction of licensed clinical staff. Incumbents provide direct hands-on care to individuals by assisting with bathing, dressing, perineal care, mobility, eating, and other daily living activities. Illustrative Duties Under direction of higher-level treatment staff, performs duties similar to those of a Nursing Assistant 1, but with greater proficiency. Positions may assist with training new staff in assigned treatment areas. Changes simple dressings as directed, gives enemas, douches, and irrigations as directed. Applies abdominal “T” binders, hot water bottles, aqua “K” pads, ice bags, and coolers, and hot and cold compresses to patients as directed. Assists patients in collecting urine and stool specimens. Observes and records patients’ quantitative food and fluid intake and waste output. Takes temperature, pulse rate, blood pressure and respiration rate. Gives therapeutic baths such as sitz and fever sponge baths. Measures and records height and weight. Inspects functioning oxygen therapy equipment including tents, masks, and cannulae to ensure appropriate functioning. Recognizes and reports abnormal signs and symptoms of common diseases and conditions to clinical staff. Applies splints, braces, slings and other self-help devices. Operates a variety of specialized patient monitoring and treatment devices. Collects and carries patients’ laundry and dry cleaning and delivers objects to appropriate locations in the health care facility. As directed by clinical staff, moves, positions, lifts and transports patients using a variety of lifts and other aids in order to make patients comfortable, prepare patients for treatment, deliver patients to treatment areas, and to prevent contractures. Brings bedpans and urinals to patients requiring assistance and attends to incontinent patients. Talks and listens to patients and responds by encouraging patients to cooperate and participate in treatment activities. May transport patients and supplies on occasion.
