Unit Description: The Emergency Department (ED) at Pennsylvania Hospital, located in the historic district of downtown Philadelphia, is a 29 bed unit that sees over 50,000 visits annually. Although not a Level One Trauma Center, the ED treats a diverse patient population in virtually all specialties. The ED focuses on performance improvement and evidenced-based practice to provide the best possible care. The ED was awarded the Emergency Nurses Association (ENA) Lantern Award. The unit is staffed with registered nurses, critical care technicians, trauma surgery nurse practitioners and resident physicians. Staff also work closely with respiratory therapy and specialized surgical groups such as orthopedics and neurosurgery. Nurses and critical care technicians working in this area receive education specific to the care of the trauma patient. The unit is staffed with registered nurses, critical care technicians, trauma surgery nurse practitioners and resident physicians. Staff also work closely with respiratory therapy and specialized surgical groups such as orthopedics and neurosurgery.
