About this Job: General Summary of Position Performs a variety of technical duties to assist with surgery. Primary Duties and Responsibilities Anticipates sequential needs of the surgeon during the operative procedure. Assists with case preparation following preference card guidelines. Contributes to the achievement of established department goals and objectives and adheres to department policies procedures quality standards and safety standards. Complies with governmental and accreditation regulations. Ensures that equipment is functioning properly and immediately notifies appropriate personnel of any problems. Functions as surgical assistant during operative procedures performing specified activities under the direct supervision of the surgeon. May act as second assistant by providing exposure and holding retractors. Identifies and handles specimens appropriately. Maintains aseptic techniques; actively monitors situations that could lead to breaches in aseptic technique. May function as a technical resource person for OR staff providing information relating to instruments and equipment. Participates in multidisciplinary quality and service improvement teams. Performs indirect patient care activities such as patient transportation as needed. Performs other duties as assigned. Provides comfort and support for preoperative patients by demonstrating sensitivity to patient's care and privacy. Responds to questions from patient families and significant others in a prompt courteous positive and knowledgeable manner and/or refers to appropriate personnel.
