Surgical Technologists, sometimes called “scrub techs”, assist in surgical procedures under the supervision of surgeons and Registered Nurses. They help to ensure quality patient care during the operative procedure and maintain a sterile field. Surgical Technologists perform a variety of functions, such as checking supplies and equipment, setting up sterile tables, performing appropriate counts, draping the sterile field, passing instruments to the surgeon and assistant during the procedure, preparing sterile dressing and cleaning instruments for terminal sterilization. This is a great hands-on learning opportunity that will allow you to enhance your skills each and every day. This position is part of Cleveland Clinic’s Weekender Flex Program and will require you to work two 12-hour shifts per weekend and one 12-hour shift during the week. Weekend shift options start at 7:00pm on Fridays and end at 7:30am on Mondays. While you are only working 36 hours a week, Cleveland Clinic will pay you for 44 hours of work and give you full-time status and benefits. This schedule allows caregivers to enjoy personal time during the week with family and friends and take care of any errands that will not interfere with a typical day shift schedule. Orientation is 3 months working Monday through Friday, from 7:00am to 3:30pm. After orientation, a caregiver in this role will work both Saturday and Sunday, 7:00pm to 7:30am, plus one 12-hour weeknight shift. There is no required call rotation when working in a weekender flex position. A caregiver who excels in this role will: Perform scrub functions and assist in circulating functions under the direction of a Registered Nurse (RN). Set up the sterile table and ensure appropriate supplies, drugs and equipment are available. Assists RN in counting all sponges, instruments, etc. at appropriate times during surgery. Assist in gowning and gloving surgical team members and draping patients. Ensure aseptic condition is maintained by the scrubbed surgical team through the procedure. Participate in the intraoperative “timeout.” Collect, identify and label specimens removed during surgical procedures and gives specimens to circulator for disposition. Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include: Graduate of a Surgical Technology Program, accredited through Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Program (CAAHEP) or Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES) OR Completion of military surgical technology program will meet the educational requirements of an accredited Surgical Technology Program Certification of either CST or TS-C required for candidates who have not completed an accredited Surgical Technology program: Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) through the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) Certified Tech in Surgery (TS-C) through the National Center for Competency Training (NCCT) Basic Life Support (BLS) through American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross Physical Requirements: Requires full range of body motion including handling and lifting patients, manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination. Hours Monday-Friday 80 hours biweekly, Shift variability upon request, minimal in-house weekend call requirement Education Requirements Graduate of an accredited school of Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) Current Ohio RN Licensure Graduate of a Masters or Doctoral nurse anesthesia program accredited by the Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs (COACRNA) Current Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) certification by the National Board of Certification and Recertification for Nurse Anesthetists (NBCRNA) Current ACLS & BLS Certifications Demonstrates current competency in the clinical responsibilities specified below. Job Responsibilities Perform a pre-anesthetic assessment, discuss anesthetic management, and administer anesthesia, all with the consultation of an appropriate staff anesthesiologist in accordance with accepted standards of professional practice, and licensing laws. Assemble, prepare, and test needed supplies, equipment and monitors prior to an anesthetic. Selects, obtains and administers the anesthetic plan of care, including induction, maintenance and emergence phases of anesthesia. Administer various types of anesthesia, including inhalation, intravenous, spinal, epidural, and peripheral nerve blocks. All anesthesia is administered under the medical direction of staff anesthesiologists. Recognizes alterations in physiologic responses to the surgical procedure and/or the anesthetic, takes appropriate action and notifies the responsible physician as indicated Transfer the patient to the appropriate postoperative area and assist in the postoperative care. Participate in the quality improvement activities and research initiatives within MHS. Physical Requirements Requires full range of motion; manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination. Requires standing and walking for extensive periods of time and the ability to lift and transport patients. Requires corrected hearing and vision to normal range.
