Assist physician/advance practice providers or other medical staff personnel with examinations and treatments by selecting and passing instruments, providing support and restraint to the patient, draping, and other assistance as directed or required. Within scope observes and documents patients condition by gathering signs, symptoms, and reactions to therapy, to identify unexpected and/or significant findings, initiates appropriate emergency procedures as necessary, and reports unusual conditions to the registered nurse/advanced practice providers as established by policy and procedure in a timely manner. May volunteer to start and maintain intravenous flow rate with Certifications, notifies registered nurse/advanced practice/physician of any problems. May discontinue IV therapy except intra-cath and central venous lines. May volunteer to start perform venipuncture/blood withdrawal with Certifications. Collects and processes specimens per policy, procedures, guidelines, and protocols. Provides non-compoicated teaching following the registered nurse/advanced practice provider/physician plan for education. Report any identified learning needs and discharge barriers. Ensures cleanliness of nursing module/station, patient exam room, and proper functioning of patient care equipment by visual inspection, routine testing, and other related methods. Provides a safe and therapeutic environment for patients and staff. Utilizes effective verbal and non-verbal forms of communication. Performs in other departments or modules to which assigned as required by the nursing/department administration to provide and maintain the established standards of care and safety. Documents care in Health Connect per policy, procedures, guidelines, and protocols. Performs other related duties as assigned and required, including orientation of new employees. Assists in coordinating the discharge process. Performs all job functions within license certification and scope of practice. Job Description Job Summary: The Patient Navigator-Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN)-Cancer Clinic works under the supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN), Medical Doctor (MD) or Nurse Practitioner (NP) to provide developmentally appropriate and age-specific direct and indirect patient care in a fast-paced outpatient cancer clinic and infusion center serving patients eighteen years of age or older with suspected or confirmed malignancies or hematologic disorder(s). Performs designated procedures and treatments which require knowledge and technical expertise within the LVN scope of practice and in accordance with established policies, procedures, protocols, techniques, and guidelines. Recognizes and reports signs and symptoms of complications and/or allergic reactions immediately to the RN, MD or NP. Exhibits mission-focused thinking and understands the sensitivity of cancer diagnosis and expresses kindness when communicating with patients facing the unknown of a serious critical illness. Orients patients to the clinic routine and prepares patients for examination. Assists MD or NP with examination and procedures as requested. Ensures insurance authorizations, tests results, appropriate coding, and other required information is available for the provider for review. Follows-up on designated case management and navigation activities as requested by the RN, MD or NP. Demonstrates flexibility and willingly floats to other areas as assigned. Performs other duties as needed. Education and Experience: Graduate of a school of vocational nursing required. Minimum six months experience as an LVN or one year of experience as a Medical Assistant (MA) in a physician back-office setting required. Minimum one year clinical experience in oncology or hematology nursing or infusion center preferred. Knowledge and Skills: Demonstrates solid knowledge of oncology/hematology disease process and treatments. Able to read, write legibly and speak in English (and Spanish preferred) with professional quality; use computer, printer and software programs necessary to the position, e.g., Microsoft Office, Outlook, electronic event reporting program, established organization electronic medical record; operate and troubleshoot equipment utilized for position; perform basic patient care activities using proper body mechanics and safety precautions; comprehend and follow-through with instructions; relate and communicate positively, effectively and professionally with others; be assertive and consistent in following and enforcing policies; work calmly and respond courteously when under pressure; collaborate; accept direction; think critically and use good judgment; problem solve and collaborate with licensed care providers as necessary; perform duties with supervision; perform basic math functions; manage multiple patient assignments effectively; organize and prioritize workload; problem solve; recall information with accuracy; pay close attention to detail; distinguish colors as necessary for position; hear sufficiently for general conversation in person and on the telephone; identify and distinguish various sounds associated with the work place and patient care; discern temperature variances through touch; see adequately to read computer screens, medical records and written documents necessary to position, exhibit professional behavior at all times.
