The MBU also features a newborn nursery for newborns requiring continued medical care after maternal discharge and infants whose mothers are transferred to other units within the Women’s Division. This unit provides comprehensive obstetrical care to females across the lifespan—serving a diverse, multicultural patient population. Inpatient care is delivered 24 hours a day, typical patients include postpartum mothers and their newborns following vaginal or cesarean deliveries, with or without complications. Newborns are generally stable but may require additional interventions such as various blood tests, glucose monitoring, car seat testing for late pre-term and phototherapy for jaundice. Before discharge, all newborns receive hearing screenings and state-mandated newborn screenings. The nurse-to-patient ratio is typically 1:3-4 couplets, ensuring attentive and personalized care.
