In the CCU and IU, the Registered Nurse is expected to administer, titrate and monitor critically ill patients on critical medications Many of these patients are post-surgical and require intense monitoring. They are able to communicate appropriately with the physicians and surgeons any concerning status changes or body system specifics that may require further intervention. CCU/IU nurses operate and are trained on life saving advanced medical equipment including but not limited to ventilators, Intra-Aortic Balloon pumps, Assistive Heart pumps, Continuous Dialysis machines, Hypothermia induction and maintenance devices, defibrillators and others. CCU/IU Nurses are required to stay current with both BLS and ACLS certifications. The Registered Nurse in CCU functions in units we call pods. This design allows the OHH nurse to maintain a 1:1 or 1:2 nurse patient ratio in the Critical Care Department and a 1:3 nurse patient ratio in the Interventional Unit. This allows CCU/IU nurses adequate time to monitor and care for critically ill patients thus ensuring the highest quality, safe and patient-focused care.
