The Shock Trauma Post-Anesthesia Care Unit is a one-of-a-kind 12-bed, Phase 1 post-anesthesia care unit located in the Shock Trauma Tower 24 hours/day, 365 days/year. The clinical population is primarily adult patients (some adolescents) requiring post-operative care specializing in traumatic injury management. Beyond recovery care and procedural nursing, this team also accepts overflow from the Trauma Resuscitation Unit when needed to maintain trauma patient admission capacity. This team is guided by American Society of Peri-Anesthesia Nurse (ASPAN) Standards and maintains education/competency expectations across peri-anesthesia, trauma and critical care specialties in accordance with their role serving roughly 20 surgical/medical services. Nurses on this team must be passionate, energetic, and high-functioning professionals skilled in interdisciplinary collaboration, looking for a complex and dynamic clinical environment. As a part of the Primary Adult Resource Center for Trauma among the other Level 1 Trauma Centers in the region, this PACU is like no other. The Thought Disorders Unit at Sheppard Pratt Health System is a 21-bed unit that treats patients with psychotic illnesses, including Schizophrenia, Schizoaffective Disorder, Bipolar Disorders, as well as Neuropsychiatric Disorders. Patients are treated under the expert care of experienced psychiatrists, nursing, and other clinical staff. With an average length of stay between 10 and 14 days, the Thought Disorders Unit is unique as it is one of the few specialized units across the country that specifically cares for patients with psychotic illnesses. What to expect. The Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist will work with the interprofessional healthcare team to deliver high-quality anesthesia within a Care Team Model. The CRNA will care for patients across all acuity levels through the lifespan in a variety of settings including surgical, obstetrical, and diagnostic areas. Monitors patients’ responses including skin color, pupil dilation, pulse, heart rate, blood pressure, respiration, ventilation, or urine output using invasive and noninvasive techniques. · Responds to emergency situations by providing airway management, administering emergency fluids or drugs, or using basic or advanced cardiac life support techniques. · Performs or manages regional anesthetic techniques such as local, spinal, epidural, caudal, nerve blocks and intravenous blocks. Obtains informed consent from patients for anesthesia procedures Assesses patients’ medical histories to predict anesthesia response. Post-Program Commitment: Upon successful completion of the program, externs in good standing will be expected to continue employment in a per diem role through graduation.
