Overview The Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) is an important member of the patient care team, supporting patients, nurses and also overall unit functioning. The CNA is responsible for helping create and maintain a safe, healing environment for our patients, and a healthy working environment for the care team. The CNA is expected to perform duties autonomously and also at the direction of the RN. The CNA reports to the Director of Patient Services. Responsibilities Assists patients as needed with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) such as feeding, dressing, and mobilizing. Attends to patient personal hygiene needs such as brushing teeth, bathing, and toileting. Repositions the patient for comfort and per protocol. Also, observes patients for changes in behavior or condition and notifies the nurse of same. Ensures all patient safety interventions are in place at all times - such as keeping call light and patient belongings within reach of patient; bed/chair alarms are on and functioning; and/or all other patient specific interventions as directed by the RN Assists RN to answer call lights quickly and determines how best to assist a patient. Rounds frequently on patients, assisting as needed. Ensures patient whiteboards are complete and updated. Assists the team in keeping patient belongings safe and accounted for. Overview This position is responsible for the daily work and work flow within the Surgical Care Unit (SCU). The Clinical Coordinator/SCU Charge RN supervises the nursing staff in coordinating schedules, nursing assignments and patient care in the preoperative and postoperative phases of surgery from preadmission through discharge. Responsibilities Daily staffing: Assigns nursing staff according to caseload, types of surgery cases, and staffing needs in accordance with Title 22. Knows the strengths of each staff member and works to provide ongoing training and mentoring as needed to bring all staff to similar levels of expertise in both the pre and post op care of surgery patients. Assigns and gives breaks and lunches. Steps in to assist when needed in all areas when there are sick calls or emergencies. Creates and maintains the six-week work and call schedule; coordinates with staff to insure accuracy and fairness. Maintains accurate daily and monthly checks for department: assigns daily check-offs including glucometer, crash cart, and others per unit policy. Responsible for overseeing the maintenance, restocking as needed, and outdates for crash cart, Malignant Hyperthermia carts, and Broselow carts Surgery daily flow: Leads and coordinates the inflow and outflow of patients; watches for delays of surgery and communicates to team and patient/family, as needed. Must maintain sight of the 'big picture' each day and make adjustments to room and nurse assignments as necessary. Overview SCU (Surgical Care Unit) RN is responsible for the preoperative preparation and recovering of all surgical patients. Responsible to act as an integral team member and keep patients moving through the unit in a safe, efficient, and timely manner. Able to apply critical thinking skills throughput the surgical continuum for each patient under their care. Skilled in post anesthesia recovery care of patient undergoing various types of procedures with different combinations of anesthesia. Responsibilities Opening and closing unit- turn lights on in Waiting Room, unlock front door, remove keys from Pyxis to unlock cabinets, prints daily schedule, gets charts out of cabinet and puts them in order. Checks each patient bay- Suction, airways, ambu bag, O2 tank. Performs QC glucometer. Assigns rooms for patient arrival. Prints H&P 's, orders labs and EKGs where appropriate. Proactively directs the patient plan of care from admission to discharge. Admits and assesses each patient in a timely manner. Follows hospital policies and procedures for patient and procedure verification including all necessary preoperative checks prior to patient going into surgery. Charts allergies and fall risk. Records all medications given on the electronic health record. Provides comfort measures as needed. Safely logs patient belongings and whereabouts. Ensures that case management referrals, if any, are completed prior to discharge. Works with Case Management and Social Services as necessary.
