Bargaining Unit PEF Job Summary The Department of Nursing at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University is seeking a full-time Registered Nurse 1, Post-Intervention Recovery Room (PIRR). The Registered Nurse 1 (T&RC) is a full performance level nurse position and possesses a license as a registered professional nurse in New York State; under the general direction of a higher level registered nurse or licensed health care provider, independently provides direct nursing care to individuals in accordance with Article 139 of the Education Law; supervises nursing care activities; and provides clinical supervision and training to Graduate Nurses (T&RC), Teaching & Research Center Licensed Practical Nurses, and direct care staff. Illustrative Duties Prepares or assists with preparation of nursing care plans consistent with individuals’ comprehensive treatment plans and medical needs. Carries out treatment procedures, administers medications, and monitors individuals’ conditions. Records notes and maintains individuals’ medical records and nursing care plans, including nursing care, medications, and treatments, reactions to care and treatment, intake and output of liquids and solids, and vital signs. Participates in the development, implementation, and revision of individual care plans as a member of a multidisciplinary treatment team. Modifies nursing care plans based on individual condition and responses to care and treatment. Triages individuals by inquiring about illnesses, injuries, and symptoms, and records findings and observations. Assesses findings, and either refers individuals directly to a physician in emergency cases or initiates appropriate remedial action; as directed, assists physicians with treatment functions. 184985 Job Description Provides physician-supervised physical and emotional care for the mother during labor, delivery, and postpartum phases. Evaluates progress and manages the labor and delivery. Evaluates and provides immediate care for the normal newborn. Job Responsibility Performs complete history and physical examination on new patients admitted to the labor room, and writes admission notes utilizing the attending physician when appropriate. Discusses new admissions with the attending physician and nursing staff including noted complications. Decides who will follow the patient and develops a plan for care. Performs admissions diagnostics and care including, but not limited to pelvic examination, cervical cultures, drawing bloods, and starting intravenous lines. Follows progress of labor of all patients in labor and delivery suite in collaboration with the attending physician and nursing staff. Monitors fetal heart rate patterns and notifies the appropriate physician of significant deviations. Examines patients periodically to determine progress in labor with ongoing assessment of maternal and fetal reaction to the progress of labor. Reports any abnormalities in patient’s condition to physician including, but not limited to meconium, bleeding, hypertonic labor, fetal distress, failure of progress in labor, malpresentation. Participates in deliveries. Performs related duties as required. All responsibilities noted here are considered essential functions of the job under the Americans with Disabilities Act. American Midwifery Board Certification, required. Has a collaborative practice agreement with a physician and designated protocols, both filed with the New York State Department of Education.
