Overview Department: PACU/Recovery Shift: Part Time; 8 Hour Shifts; Call Required Facility: Saint Joseph Medical Center Location: Joliet, IL Responsibilities The PACU RN is accountable directly to the OR Charge Nurse and the Director of Surgical Services, and indirectly to the House Supervisor. The Registered Nurse is responsible for the delivery of patient care through the nursing process of assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation for all patients within the PACU scope of services. The Registered Nurse also coordinates the post-operative care of the patient with the surgeon and anesthesiologist, directs and guides other personnel while maintaining standards of care in the PACU. He/She communicates with the physician about changes in the patient’s clinical condition including hemodynamic monitoring, results of diagnostic studies and abnormal results and symptomatology. Works with other departments and co-workers to provide quality patient care across the continuum, efficient patient flow and unit maintenance and organization. Responsible for adherence to regulations, standards and hospital or unit policies and procedures. Responsible for participation in Performance Improvement activities, unit meetings and in-services. Acts as a resource for other personnel as appropriate. Qualifications EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, TRAINING 1. Current and valid state RN License. 2. Current BLS (AHA) certificate upon hire and maintain current. 3. ACLS (AHA) certificate 30 days upon hire and maintain current. 4. PALS (AHA) certificate preferred. 5. Previous Critical Care or PACU experience or minimum of one year on the job training. 6. Critical Care RN (CCRN) preferred. 7. Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred. JOB SUMMARY Provides residents with daily nursing care in accordance with current federal, state and local standards, guidelines and regulations, facility policies and as may be directed by the Wound Nurse, Charge Nurse, Supervisor, Assistant Director of Nursing, Director of Nursing or Administrator to ensure that the highest degree of quality care is maintained at all times. QUALIFICATIONS Successful completion of a nursing arts course in an accredited nurse training program as evidenced by a diploma, certificate or other written verification from the school and successful completion of the Department approved nursing assistant competency evaluation or successful completion of a United States military training program that includes the content of the Basic Nursing Assistant Training Program Be at least 16 years of age, of temperate habits and good moral character, honest, reliable, and trustworthy. Provide evidence of employment or occupation, if any, and residence for two years prior to initial employment as a nursing assistant. Must possess a high school diploma or G.E.D. Must possess current CPR certificate or become certified within two weeks of employment. Demonstrates interest and/or knowledge in caring for the ill, disabled, and elderly. Participates in the skin hand off report with nursing members. Communicates to the staff nurse, Wound Care Coordinator initial signs of skin abnormality in skin integrity. Monitors turning and positioning of residents and assists when needed. Monitors shower and bed bath completion and assists when needed. Monitors off-loading of heels or placement of heel lift boots, per resident modality. Participates and assists in the daily rounds with the Wound Care Coordinator. Monitors staff compliance with preventative skin moisture barrier, equipment usage, (wedge cushions, wheel chair cushions, pillows) and specialty mattresses Monitors off-loading in wheel chairs Provides assistance with activities of daily living to a specific number of residents and/or as directed by the staff nurse. Assists in developing a written plan of care for each customer that identifies the problems/needs of the customer. Attends and actively participates in resident care plan conference, and Resident Council and/or Family Council when invited. Reports all concerns, complaints made by the customer or their family to the Administrator. Makes rounds to assure customers are safe and comfortable. Maintains an atmosphere of warmth, personal interest, and positive emphasis, as well as a calm environment throughout the department. Participates in In-service Education Programs. Assists in implementing and maintaining an effective orientation program that orients the new Ladies and Gentlemen of Alden to the facility, his/her department the wound program, and its policies and procedures. Recommends to the Director of Nursing the equipment and supply needs of the department. Inventories and stores the new customer’s personal possessions. Assists customer’s with packing personal possessions when they are transferred to a new room or when being discharged. Participates in and receives the nursing report upon reporting for duty. Maintains intake and output records as instructed. Checks and reports bowel movements and character of stools. Makes occupied and unoccupied beds, changes bed linens, and straightens rooms, closet, and drawers. Notifies housekeeping if mattress in need of cleaning or replacement. Answers call lights promptly, answer telephone calls as needed and run errands as requested. Obtains blood pressure, temperature, pulse, respiration, heights and weights as needed. Does complete check of skin condition when dressing, undressing, turning/repositioning, etc. Reports any skin abnormalities to the Staff Nurse. Observes customer’s physical condition, attitude, reactions, appetite, etc., and reports any changes and/or unusual findings to the Nurse/RCC so care plan can be updated. Performs personal services for customer’s (i.e., reading, writing letters, etc.) as time allows. Encourages customers to help themselves and promotes self-care in aiding rehabilitation. Assists with care of dying and expired customers. Records resident food/fluid intake. Completes meal monitor form as indicated. Reports changes in resident's eating habits to the Staff Nurse. Keeps customers water pitchers clean and filled with fresh water on each shift unless contraindicated. Serves between meals and bedtime snacks. Wears transfer belt at all times and utilizes as needed. Keeps the nurses' call system within easy reach of the resident. Reports all hazardous equipment and conditions to the Staff Nurse immediately. Participates in the development, maintenance and implementation of the facility's Quality Assurance program for the Nursing Department. Performs other related duties as assigned. Primary Responsibilities: Assess patient status throughout the episode of care Develop an individualized perianesthesia plan of care by implementing: Provide hand-off report to other teammates that are accurate, concise and pertinent to the patient’s condition and response to care. Perform all other duties as assigned . Qualifications Graduate of an Accredited School of Nursing. One year of PACU experience preferred. Current state licensure to practice within good standings. Successful completion of Basic Life Support (BLS) or Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) within 90 days of employment or documentation of current BLS/BCLS certification. Successful completion of Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) Course within 90 days of employment or documentation of current ACLS certification. Successful completion of Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) course is required when pediatric care is included in the facility scope services within 90 days of employment or documentation of current PALS certification.
