Our Med/Surg Observation Unit is a fast paced 24 bed telemetry/medical-surgical unit. Common problems seen in our unit include chest pain, syncope, congestive heart failure, pneumonia, and diabetes. Our nurse patient ratio ranges from 4-6 patients depending on acuity. Our care team includes a charge nurse and unit assistants with support from respiratory, lab, and case management departments. We orient new nurses to our unit by providing a 6-8 week orientation program with a dedicated preceptor team, complemented by classroom courses, and a nurse residency program for new graduates. The ICU cares for a wide variety of critical patients with complex medical conditions- including respiratory failure, sepsis, renal failure, induced hypothermia, and prolonged intermittent renal replacement therapy. The ICU team works in collaboration with the dedicated stroke unit to provide award winning advanced stroke care. We maintain a fast pace to meet the needs of those in the most acute phases of cardiac disease. Common cardiac procedures/diagnosis seen in ICU include post open heart surgery, severe decompensated heart failure, cardiogenic shock, STEMI, aortic dissection, and acute severe valvular dysfunction. Daily care and responsibilities may include managing various life-support systems including ventilation, heart monitoring, and lifesaving medications.
