Description A nurse practitioner (NP) as described in Title VIII, Article 139 section 6910 of the New York Education Law is a RN who has earned a separate certification as an NP through advanced clinical nursing education in a distinct specialty area of practice. Nurse practitioners are independent practitioners who diagnose, treat, and prescribe for a patient's condition that falls within their specialty area of practice. NOTE: Medical orders, progress notes and treatments plans are not required to be countersigned by a physician. Responsibilities CLINICAL PRACTICE 1. Assesses the health status of patients/families by means of comprehensive health history and physical examination. 2. Initiates and orders selected therapeutic and diagnostic procedures, consultations and laboratory examination, prescribes medication regimens, interprets findings and alters plan of care according to accepted standards of care and practice guidelines 3. Educates and counsels in the areas of health promotion, maintenance, disease prevention, and management of acute/chronic illnesses. 4. Documents findings and plan of care in the patient's medical record. 5. Consults with physician according to established standards, policies, procedures, and protocols. 6. Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care, based on physical, psychosocial, educational, safety, and related criteria, appropriate to the age of the patients served in assigned area. 7. Initiates referrals to specialty services and fosters continuity of care. 8. Participates in team meetings and conferences to enhance an interdisciplinary approach to care delivery. 9. Maintains patient/employee confidentiality in the management of information. 10. Develops the plan of care based on the diagnoses and individual patient needs: 11. Records, reports, and interprets the clients' responses to the plan of care. 12. Performs a patient record review with the collaborating physician in a timely fashion but not less than every three months if utilizing a collaborative practice agreement. 13. Completes the Focused Professional Practice Proctoring Evaluation (FPPE) or the Ongoing Professional Practice Proctoring Evaluation (OPPE) as required by Medical Staff for continued credentialing status. 13. Practices as a member of the allied health staff according to the rules and regulations of the Medical Staff and the bylaws of the Hospital Staff. PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT 1. Supports the mission, vision, philosophy and goals of the Department of Nursing and the MSHS. 2. Demonstrates accountability for own nursing practice. 3. Qualifications At least two years of nursing experience in area of specialty practice applied for. Nurse Practitioner experience of at least one year preferred Licensure: New York State License with current registration as a registered nurse. State Certification: Certified by the New York State Department of Education as a Nurse Practitioner with current registration as follows: a. Is a graduate of New York State registered Nurse Practitioner Program or equivalent OR is certified as a Nurse Practitioner by a national association via examination. b. Has completed a pharmacy component of not less than the required semester hours or the equivalent AND has been instructed in New York State and Federal Laws relating to prescriptions and recordkeeping (3-hour course). c. Has a Collaborative Practice Agreement with a physician and designated protocols if less than 3600 hours experience as a practicing Nurse Practitioner. OR Has a Collaborative Relationship with a physician based on employment in clinical practice in the NP role at Mount Sinai Hospital. If there is a documented work history as a Nurse Practitioner with greater than 3600 practice hours. Please note all NPs regardless of their status will be placed on an FPPE initially) Education: Master's degree program designed to prepare a NP to diagnose, treat, and prescribe for a patient's condition that fall within their specialty area of practice or the successful completion of an approved supplemental education program, i.e., post-Masters NP certificate. This role supports comprehensive care across the continuum—from high‑risk assessment and diagnostic workup to treatment, survivorship, and long‑term follow‑up. The ideal candidate brings clinical expertise, patient‑centered communication, and a commitment to evidence‑based oncology practice. **About the Opportunity** The team includes 8 providers, 8 APNs, and 52 ancillary staff. You will provide dedicated support across 3 oncology floors within the hospital. Flexible hours - 1-2 days a week. 3/6/8 hours in a day. **What your day will look like** Determines and prioritizes patient care needs. Diagnoses are determined and prioritized from the assessment data using appropriate complex clinical reasoning. Performs or implements interventions and treatments with knowledge of health care research findings and reflecting a scientific basis and theory. Order, perform and interpret laboratory tests. The Nurse Practitioner/Physician Assistant will order and interpret any tests necessary to the medical evaluation. Examples include CBC, serum chemistry, tumor markers, chest x-ray, cat scans, nuclear scans, MRI, venous Doppler studies, EKG and Echo at appropriate oncology disease specific treatment interval as defined by NCCN guidelines. Select and performs tests and therapeutic procedures for the patient as necessary, adhering to scope of practice guidelines and program area's curriculum. Prescribe Drugs: The Nurse Practitioner/Physician Assistant will prescribe drugs as necessary as appropriate for the Hematology/Oncology office in accordance with state and federal law. Provide preventive care and diagnosis and treatment of episodic, short-term and stable chronic hematologic/oncologic problems. Identifies educational needs of patients and families and collaborates with other members of the multidisciplinary patient care team to develop programs and materials for team members, patient/family and the community.
