Ensures proper illness and injury care and disease prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and recovery. The Nurse Practitioner works within a collaborative model to provide quality care and to improve patient outcomes by strengthening continuity of care in all settings for patients, families, and staff in both the hospital and physician practice settings. When department/case applicable, the Nurse Practitioner (NP) remains responsible for the patient throughout the course of the treatment, provides the physical examination, the diagnosis, and the health care plan, determines when the patient has recovered, and releases the patient. The NP may refer the patient to physicians for consultation or to specialized health resources for treatment but retains responsibility for clinical management as well as any subsequent medication. In addition to job description requirements, incumbents must also meet minimum criteria for medical staff privileges. Responsibilities: Appropriately prescribes pharmaceuticals according to age, chronic medical conditions, allergies, drug interactions, and duration of therapy. Perform routine and specialty physical exams and document specific age-related preventative health screening. Educates and counsels patients to promote wellness. Addresses and provides resources for health risk behaviors. Interprets diagnostic tests for patient and provides appropriate referrals or consultations. Performs technical and surgical procedures for patients as necessary. Appropriately dispenses pharmaceuticals according to age, chronic medical conditions, allergies, drug interactions, and duration of therapy. Manages workers’ compensation cases, reviewing full work-related incident and prescribing appropriate plan of care. Documents status of modified duty and provides information to patient’s employer. Upholds the professional code of ethics. Keeps all licenses/certifications up to date (including ACLS and PALS, if applicable). Provide agreed upon coverage to care for patients in the appropriate settings (ex. ambulatory office and/or hospital) during business hours and evening/weekends, as mutually agreed upon and per medical staff bylaws. Performs back office testing following approved AHN protocols and policies. Assists providers with examination and procedures. May serve as a scribe with additional training. Provides follow up with patients at designated intervals via patient's preferred method (telephone, electronic, written) in accordance with provider instructions. Notifies patients of test results under the direction of provider in a timely manner. Prepares exam room for patient visit. Ensures adequate inventory of medical supplies. Ensures all patient treatment areas are at all times stocked with the appropriate supplies using established inventory standards. Cleans and sterilizes instruments per established AHN approved policy and manufacturer's guidelines. Accurately performs lab controls and equipment checks as assigned. Administers and accurately documents medications in accordance with policy and safe practice. Documents accurately in the electronic health record (EHR) according to established standards and work flows. Accurately performs clerical office functions and other duties as assigned. May require floating/travel between physician office locations. Qualifications Minimum High School / GED Completion of a Medical Assistant Program OR 1 year of Medical Assistant OR 1 year in a direct patient care role, including vital signs. Candidate experience must align with expected clinical duties (i.e., injections, phlebotomy, EKGs) CPR – American Heart Association Act 34 Criminal Background Clearance Certificate Act 33 Child Abuse Clearance Certificate Act 73 FBI Fingerprinting Criminal Background Clearance Certificate Certification Requirements Employees who have graduated from a medical assistant program within five years OR proof of one year of work experience as a medical assistant in the last three years must complete certification training and/or attempt testing within 30 days of hire and must obtain certification within 120 days of hire. Accepted Medical Assistant Certification (NHA, AAMA, AMT, NCCT, AMCA) Employees who have not met the above certification criteria may have the opportunity to sit for a company proctored certification exam when qualified.
