Overview The Department of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation at Macon & Joan Brock Virginia Health Sciences at Old Dominion University is seeking an outstanding Medical Assistant to join the team. This is a full time position for a certified medical assistant, providing outpatient care for our patients and assisting our physicians in all clinical areas of the practice. Responsibilities Triage of incoming patients by obtaining vital signs, chief complaint, reconcile medication list, reconcile allergies and prepare patient for the visit. Assists physicians with examinations, minor surgeries, diagnostic procedures, and treatments. Prepare exam rooms for patient visits, restocking of the clinical area and exam rooms. Sterilize instruments when used and maintain medical equipment. Assist patients with completing required forms. Respond to questions from patients, family members, faculty/residents, other health care providers in a timely and professional manner. Patient phone calls should be answered on the same day they are logged in, before leaving for the day. If patient is not home at the first attempt, a notation should be made in the medical record. All patient conversations must be documented in the electronic medical record. Obtain all pertinent records and tests relating to the current visit and scan information into the patient’s electronic medical record. Reviews patient charts prior to appointment to ensure proper documentation/authorization is on file. Document interventions in the electronic medical record. Review the chart for completeness, test results and billing. Schedule all patient referrals to include physical therapy and other diagnostic testing. Respond to incoming calls relating to patient care and document appropriately in the electronic medical record. Obtain prior authorizations for required medications. Responsible for reviewing opioid treatment agreement with all new and existing patients Responsible for notifying patients when their prescriptions are ready for pickup. Assist with Urine Drug Screenings: collection process & assuring chain of custody. Follow EVMS protocols related to infection control, environmental safety and patient confidentiality. Complete annual recertification for OSHA, Blood Borne Pathogens, Compliance, Respiratory FIT and IT policy. Maintain current CPR certification. MA staff is required to fill in for other clinical staff during vacations and illness and perform other duties as assigned by physicians or supervisors. The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) is responsible for overseeing and assisting with the day-to-day patient care including but not limited to taking vitals, administering meds/treatments, assisting physicians, doing wound care, patient education, documentation, coordinating care, focusing on comfort and supporting quality initiatives, in a fast-paced office. Overview The Department of Family Medicine at Macon & Joan Brock Virginia Health Sciences at Old Dominion University is seeking an outstanding Medical Assistant to join the team. Position assists Physicians and Nurses with patient care to include triage and stocking supplies. Also prepares patients for provider visits and assisting providers with procedure. Position includes responsibility to assist with front and back office procedures to include scheduling appointments, checking patinates in and out. Maintains cleanliness, safety and efficiency in the clinic. Prepares used equipment for re-sterilization. Knows legal requirements for reporting to police, health department, and other agencies and follows requirements. Accompanies or transfers patients to other departments such as lab or x-ray. Cleans and stocks examination rooms. Manages time in order to expedite patient flow. Assists with minor out-patient surgery. Greets patients courteously, determines their needs, and offers assistance. Registers patients by performing necessary procedures, such as preparation of records, reports, notices, service charge slips, and payor information. Interviews patients, relatives, or others responsible to determine payment arrangements and refers unusual cases to immediate supervisor. May assist self-pay patients in making suitable arrangements for balances due beyond initial deposits or third-party payments. Answers inquires to patient accounts and advises patient on insurance benefits. Receives all payments and deposits, issues receipts for all monies received and otherwise makes proper accounting for all funds received. Posts charges daily to proper patient account. Posts payments to accounts daily. Determines billing method for third party payor. Contacts insurance carriers/agencies to obtain pre-certification of ancillary, admission and surgical procedures. Operates various office equipment to include copiers, fax machines and other equipment as assigned. Operates communication systems, placing and answering telephone calls, paging or contacting staff . May make and maintain appointment schedules for clinic physicians. May secure required signatures on reports and records relative to release of information, according to policies and procedures. Contacts patients, physicians, or others for information necessary to properly complete insurance or other type billings. Types memos, correspondence, etc., as needed. Compiles periodic and statistical reports and other data as directed. Obtain patient history and take vital signs to assist physician with examination and treatment. Prepare and maintain examination and treatment area. Perform selected tests that assist with diagnosis and treatment. Screen and follow-up patient test results. Prepare and administer medications as directed by physician and maintain medication records. Qualifications High School Diploma and Graduate of Medical Assistant Training Program. Ability to type a minimum of 30 words per minute accurately. Three (3) to six (6) months on-the-job training as required to attain proficiency of assigned duties and responsibilities.
