The Admissions Nurse works closely with Admissions and Referral Center (ARC) staff, the physicians, and the patient and their families to establish trust and rapport when interviewing a patient’s medical history, current medications, current health updates, vitals, and the nursing processes to both adult and adolescents to ensure the patients experiences a seamless transition to the unit. This position will work as a Float Nurse between admissions and the floor. May work 4- 10 hour shifts or 3- 12 hour shifts with the expectation that the shift would start in the late afternoon and work into the evening during peak admissions times. Key Job Duties and Responsibilities: Demonstrates a high level of mental and emotional tolerance sensitivity, diplomacy, sound judgment, and a professional attitude when relating with patients, families and co-workers throughout the admissions process. Provides support and concern for the patient to ease anxiety during the admissions process. Responsible for documentation of patients’ medical history, and findings as part of the assessment and admissions process, continually assesses and reassesses the patient’s medical and psychiatric status and changing needs. Accompanies the patient to the unit and assists with the transition to the unit. Performs duties with frequent interruptions, in close quarters and under time constraints in a professional manner. Maintains a current knowledge of the legal aspects of nursing and of the policies, procedures and regulations of the hospital. Demonstrates the ability to handle incoming crisis calls, make referrals and complete assessments as necessary. Performs other duties as assigned Qualifications Current RN licensure in the state of Michigan. Basic understanding of psychiatric nursing theory and practice. 2 years of previous psychiatric clinical experience preferred. Demonstrates clinical competency in providing general nursing care. IMPLEMENTATION—Establish priorities of patient care based on essential patient needs and available resources of time, personnel, equipment and supplies. EVALUATION—Evaluate the patient’s response to nursing interventions and physician ordered therapy / diagnostics. Update or modify plan of care to meet the current needs of the patient. PATIENT EDUCATION—Educate the patient and significant others based on the cognitive needs of each and defined by patient outcome goals. DOCUMENTATION—Document concise, accurate and timely information in the patient care record. PATIENT/FAMILY RIGHTS—Demonstrate knowledge of and respect for patient and significant others’ rights, including confidentiality. SAFETY/RISK MANAGEMENT—Follow established standards in provision for safety. LEGAL ISSUES—Demonstrate awareness of legal issues in all aspects of patient care and department function and strive to manage situations in a reduced risk manner. EMERGENCIES—Perform efficiently in emergency patient situations following established standards, remaining calm, informing appropriate persons, and documenting events. KNOWLEDGE BASE—Maintain a current knowledge base and use standards of care in professional practice. PROFESSIONALISM—Assume responsibility for own practice including appearance, attendance, punctuality and flexibility in scheduling. STAFFING—Demonstrate flexibility in staffing patterns and resolution of staffing conflicts; participate in temporary assignment measures. ORIENTATION-Successful completion of unit-specific core competencies as defined in the orientation checklist. DELEGATION--Evaluates and identifies patient needs and assigns appropriate staff to address specific individual patient needs. Directs and reviews the work of support staff to assure nursing care plan is fully implemented and patient needs are addressed. Assumes supervisory duty for department employees in absence of Clinical Director and Clinical Coordinator per HR-45 policy.
