The Birth Place is an 18-room Labor, Delivery, Recovery, and Postpartum (LDRP) unit delivering family-centered care for over 1,000 births annually, staffed by a multidisciplinary team and supported by advanced monitoring and best practices. The Level II Special Care Nursery cares for infants 32+ weeks, including those with respiratory or feeding needs, in collaboration with Mass General and Boston Children’s specialists. The 8-bed Pediatrics unit serves newborns through adolescents with a range of medical and post-operative needs. Together, these departments offer a dynamic, collaborative environment where float nurses deliver high-quality, compassionate care across the full continuum of maternal and child health. About the Job The MCH Clinical Float Pool RN is an experienced registered nurse who provides flexible coverage across multiple units within the Maternal Child Health division. The float pool nurse does not have a fixed unit assignment -- floating within the division is the primary function of this role. Float pool nurses are selected for this role based on clinical depth in their home specialty, a genuine comfort with variability, and willingness to maintain competency across multiple care settings. What You’ll Do: Float within assigned units on most scheduled shifts as directed by the staffing supervisor or charge nurse. Provide safe, competent, independent nursing care in each credentialed unit -- functioning as a full staff nurse, not in a support or observation capacity. LDRP Track: Provide intrapartum, postpartum, triage, and immediate newborn care in LDRP. Provide stable Level II neonatal care in SCN. SCN Track: Provide stable Level II neonatal care in SCN. Provide postpartum maternal and well-newborn couplet care and nursery function in postpartum unit. Both tracks: Provide general pediatric care in the Pediatrics unit when credentialed and deployed by supervisor. Maintain all required certifications current at all times. Report any lapse to the float pool coordinator immediately. Complete cross-training orientation in all assigned units within the timeline established at hire. Maintain recency-of-practice requirements for each credentialed unit as outlined in the float pool policy. Complete annual competency validation for all credentialed units. Complete accurate, timely documentation in the EHR in accordance with unit-specific standards on every shift. Communicate proactively with the staffing supervisor and charge nurse regarding any concerns about assignment appropriateness, clinical recency, or patient safety. Who You Are: Current, unrestricted RN licensure in the state of practice. Minimum 3 years, preferably 5 years, of active clinical experience in the home unit specialty (LDRP or SCN). Current practice within the past 12 months required. BLS and NRP current at hire. EFM competency current at hire or within 60 days (LDRP track). MDS Coordinator/RN

Schedules and Completes Minimum Data Set (MDS) Assessments and care plans for all residents assigned . 2. Monitors completion of MDS Assessments by other disciplines and ensures timely completion per CMS and RAI guidelines and Signs off the RN completion. 3. Advises supervisor of incomplete and/or untimely assessments by disciplines other than nursing. 4. Ensures accurate, timely completion of the MDS/CAAs/Care plans sheet for assigned residents. 5. Initiates care plans and supporting activities that will result in best possible outcome for assigned residents. 6. Generates and distributes monthly care plan calendar for the following month. 7. Conducts care plan conferences for assigned residents. 8. Maintains and updates all care plans and assessments for assigned residents on a quarterly basis (at minimum) and adds/deletes issues, as necessary. 9. Reviews all resident incidents and accidents and the 24-hour report daily to ensure that care plans for assigned residents reflect current and changing needs. 10. At patient care conferences, facilitates, and coordinates the activities of the disciplines of nursing, rehabilitation, dietary, activities, social services, and restorative nursing. 11. Monitors and ensures completion of 7-day look-back documentation by nursing staff within prescribed MDS timeframe. 12. Participates in facility management meetings as requested. 13. Monitors and audits clinical record documentation on assigned residents to ensure accuracy and timeliness. 14. Advises Director of Nursing Care of persistent issues related to non-compliant documentation on assigned residents. 15. Promotes and participates in ongoing education, inside and outside the facility, to maintain and enhance knowledge of current / new regulations. 16. Maintains current knowledge of RAI Manual and MDS PDPM assessment process. 17. Attends in-service training and other educational programs as directed or authorized. 18. Performs all job duties in a manner that ensures that confidential information and resident rights are protected at all times. 19. Supports quality of care and operational efficiency by maintaining acceptable attendance record. 20. Performs all job duties in a safe manner in accordance with established safety guidelines, protocols and expectations. 21. Reports unsafe conditions when noted and immediately reports accidents to immediate supervisor or another designated on-duty manager. 22. Supports and promotes facility and company standards for superior customer service by exhibiting positive, courteous, and helpful behavior when dealing with all internal and external customers. 23. Complies with established standards described in facility policies and procedures, code of conduct, corporate compliance plan, employee handbook and other company documents and publications. Minimum Qualification Education: Graduate of an accredited school of nursing in preparation for Registered Nurse or Licensed Practical Nurse licensure. Experience: One-year previous experience in long term care environment, must be experience in RN/LPN. Knowledge of MDS and Care Plan process. Basic knowledge of PPS and PDPM. Other Requirements: 1. Must be a Registered Nurse or a Licensed Practical Nurse licensed by the MA Board of Nursing. 2. Demonstrates verbal and written communication skills (in the English language) sufficient to perform the principal duties and responsibilities outlined in this position description. 3. Capable of performing the following minimum physical requirements: a. heavy lifting such as transferring residents from bed to wheelchair and / or lifting and carrying heavy objects. b. stooping, bending, kneeling, and reaching such as bathing a resident, wiping spills off floor, making a bed, lifting food trays from a cart, placing materials on shelves, etc. c. frequent walking. d. pushing and pulling heavy carts such as food carts, medication carts, hand trucks, etc. e. climbing stairs, stools, ladders. Provides care, treatment and services through the successful coordination and completion of a series of processes that include assessment, planning care, providing care, in accordance with departmental and hospital policies and procedures. Commits to working a minimum of 32 hours, with at least 16 hours (in 2 shifts) worked during a night and/or weekend per 4 week schedule. Also works 1 major summer or winter holiday. Compensation Pay Range: $40.11 - $81.26 1. Medication Administration a. Demonstrates knowledge of and follows SSH policies and procedures for administering, transcribing, and recording medications. b. Completes medication reconciliation process following SSH policy and procedure. c. Demonstrates proper procedure for the documentation of narcotic withdrawal, administration, verifies count, wastes per policy and resolves narcotic discrepancy. 2. Plan of care/Documentation/Patient Family Centered Care/Patient Experience Develops, discusses, and communicates a prioritized problem list/plan of care for each patient. a. Develop, evaluate and update individualized plan of care for patient and documents outcomes. b. Initiating admission assessment within 8 hours of admissions, identifies and documents patient/family/significant other teaching needs upon admission and throughout hospitalization. c. Continues assessment/reassessment and identifies care needs within established nursing practice. d. Documents all patient care following the department of nursing policy, unit based standards, disease processes (CHF, PNA vaccines) and nurse sensitive indicators (falls, skin, CAUTI) e. Assess/reassesses and documents patient's level of comfort utilizing the appropriate pain scale and the patient's response to each intervention both pharmacological and non-pharmacological per South Shore Hospital policy. f. Works on behalf of patient /family. Seeks help to represent patient/family when they are unable to represent themselves. g. Raises ethical questions and concerns with clinical team. Seeks available resources to help formulate and understand ethical decisions. h. Actively communicates plan of day via white board updating every shift. i. Facilitates discharge/transfer by goal of 12:00pm, communicates barriers utilizing chain of command. 3. Safety/Quality - Foster's a "Culture of Safety" through personal ownership and commitment to a safe environment. a. Verifies patient identification with two identifiers prior to the start of any invasive procedure, including "time out", administration of care, medications, labeled specimen's an documents confirming the correct patient, procedure, site, equipment and consent. b. Adheres to universal precautions, makes appropriate use of personal protective equipment at all times and appropriately disposes of hazardous materials.
