About the unit Big Rapids Campus has a 22 bed medical surgical unit and a 4 bed critical care unit. This campus is the perfect place to gain experience as a new nurse and grow your career! The patient population in Big Rapids is very diverse, it consists of primarily hospitalist medicine patients with a wide variety of diagnosis, some of which include: pneumonia, COPD, cellulitis, kidney failure, and bowel obstructions. These diagnoses provide the opportunity to develop acute care skills such as IV placement, chest tubes and NG placement/management. In our critical care unit it is common to see high acuity patients with sepsis, hyperglycemia and respiratory failure whose plan of care would include managing medication drips (insulin, vasopressors, etc.) and the utilization of equipment such as ventilators and BIPAPs. Founded in 1938, Wilcox Medical Center is a not-for-profit medical center dedicated to providing the Kaua‘i community with accessible quality health care.
