About this Job: General Summary of Position Responsible for the scrub duties in simple to complex surgical interventions including assessment of instruments equipment and supply needs of each case assigned. Assembles the necessary instruments supplies and equipment checking items to assure they are in working condition. Applies and monitors the principles of aseptic technique throughout the peri-operative phase. Performs intra-operative sponge and needle counts according to policy and procedure. Ensures safety of the patient during the use of electrical equipment. Correctly collects and accurately labels specimens. Applies principles of proper body alignment during the transfer and positioning of patients. Ensures and respects the patient's right to privacy dignity and confidentiality. Assures the Environment of Care is maintained according to regulatory guidelines. Labels and reports malfunctioning equipment to appropriate persons. Participates in the evaluation of new supplies equipment and or instrumentation. Functions in a permanent on-call position. This position is primarily at Weston, but caregivers will be required to float to the unit of greatest need within Cleveland Clinic Martin Health – North, South and Tradition. A caregiver who excels in this role will: Provide quality, individualized patient care in the perioperative, intraoperative and postoperative phases. Follow guidelines for perioperative practices as established by AORN. Review daily assignment and ascertain surgeon-specific preferences and anesthesia. Identify and prioritize individual patient care needs. Plan care based on contemplated procedure, standards of practice, admission assessment and MD preferences. Assemble, check and open sterile packs, sutures and more. Practice and assist others in maintaining aseptic technique and electrical and environmental safety in department . Comply with required standards for patient positioning, skin preparation, counting and side-site verification. Remain with the sterile setup to assure maintenance of the sterile field. Assist with draping the sterile field. Report and/or correct any break in sterile technique. Prepare and edit surgeon's preference lists to assure quality care of the surgical patient. Communicate pertinent information during procedure and during personnel changes. Assure that equipment and supplies are utilized at appropriate levels and returned to their proper location after use. Collect specimens as directed by the surgeon and identify the origin of each specimen to the RN Circulator. Assist surgeons and assistants with retraction and suction as directed. Assure that all biohazard material is handled and disposed of properly using universal precautions. Keep accurate counts of all sutures, sharps, soft goods and instruments. (c) Verification-- A facility that employs or contracts with an ST shall verify the ST meets the continuing education requirements. Section 503. Exception. A facility may employ or contract an ST who does not meet the requirements of section 501 to practice surgical technology if: (1) after a diligent and thorough effort has been made, the facility is unable to employ or contract with a sufficient number of qualified STs who meet the requirements of section 501; and (2) the health care facility makes a written record of its efforts under (1) and retains the record at the facility.
