Kapi‘olani offers numerous community programs and services, such as the Kapi‘olani Child Protection Center and Sex Abuse Treatment Center, and through our affiliation with the University of Hawai‘i, we are home to the John A. Burns School of Medicine Pediatrics and OB/GYN residency programs. The Carter Unit at Kapi‘olani is a pediatric unit dedicated to the care of patients from birth to approximately 6 to 8 years of age with the goal of providing comprehensive, individualized and family centered care to our patients. The experienced team in the Carter Unit provides complex medical/surgical care, care for medically fragile children and restorative care, telemetry, cardiac monitoring, oxygen therapy, chest tubes, traction, Bi-pap ventilation, apnea monitoring, hyperbilirubinemia phototherapy, and IV therapy, as well as postoperative open-heart surgery. The Wilcox Unit at Kapi‘olani Medical Center for Women & Children is a pediatric unit dedicated to providing family centered, comprehensive, multidisciplinary care for children with cancer and blood disorders and general pediatric medical surgical care of adolescents and other aged pediatric patients. Kapi‘olani Medical Center for Women & Children is a member of the Children’s Oncology Group, which enables our children to receive the most current treatment by participating in the National Cancer Center Institute, approved clinical trials. This opportunity is for the new graduate nurse who aspires to become a pediatric nurse, as well as experienced nurses seeking to transition into pediatric care. The Carter and Wilcox units training program is a mentored program designed to provide both new and experienced nurses with structured support throughout their transition from student to novice, to advanced beginner, to ultimately independent practitioner. During the 10-week program, time away or PTO will not be approved or granted. Selected participants must be available to rotate between night shift and day shift, weekends, and varying shift lengths including 4, 8, 10 or 12 hours for the duration of the training program.
