The surgical technologist provides care within the MercyOne North Iowa Standards of Care, AORN Standards of Care and Practice and the Operating Room Policies and Procedures. What you Will Do: Assists the circulating nurse in assessing the patients' needs and helps to develop and implement the plan of care. Provides care to all surgical patients in accordance with the operating room’s performance standards, physician preference cards, and the AORN Standards of Care and Practice. Assists in setting up rooms. Secures safe transport of the patient if needed. Confirms correctness of the surgical site, prepares the pre-operative site, instruments the case, manages the sterile field and specimens, and turns the room around under the supervision of the circulating nurse. Serves as a steward for the hospital’s human and material resources. Meets productivity expectations of unit/department as defined by unit manager. Identifies accurate changes on surgeons' preference cards. Utilizes and maintains appropriate supplies during the case and in the department. Develops and maintains knowledge/skills in all surgical specialties. Hours: Day Shift - 8- hour shifts. Specialty team: call 10-12 days per month Call response time is 30 min. Minimum Qualifications: Education: Graduate of a surgical technologist program is required, or graduate of an LPN program with Surgical experience. Certification as a surgical technologist required. LPN license required if graduate of LPN program. Must have at least 2 years of experience functioning as a Surgical Tech. Must provide proof of Basic Life Support (BLS Healthcare Provider, American Heart Association; or American Red Cross, Professional Rescuer-LIVE class only) via current card prior to employment or within 60 days of hire and maintains current status. Scrubs and provides instruments, sutures, and other sterile supplies during surgical procedure. Participants in the training and orientation of surgical technology staff and students, as assigned. The Cardiovascular Operating Room Surgical Technologist is responsible for assisting the physician with advanced tasks during surgical procedures which include cardiopulmonary bypass/heart-lung machine use, cardiac assistive devices, and vascular access and interventions. The CVOR ST must be able to work under high pressure in a fast paced environment. CORE FUNCTIONS 1. Prepares for surgical procedures. Pulls appropriate instruments and supplies and ensures good working order of instruments. Reviews case carts for correct instruments and supplies. Troubleshoots malfunctioning equipment and makes minor adjustments or calls biomedical equipment staff. Checks schedule and plans ahead for upcoming surgical case needs. 2. Anticipates the surgeon's needs. Passes instruments and retracts tissue. Maintains competency to scrub in a minimum of two surgical specialties. 3. Demonstrates the principles of aseptic technique and universal precautions throughout the procedure. Disposes of sharps and trash and places used supplies into case cart for processing. Participates in counting sharps, instruments and sponges. Prepares instruments for cleaning following each case. 4. Ensures that all surgeon preference cards and pick lists are accurate. 5.
