POSITION SUMMARY This position selects and places surgical instruments, supplies and equipment during surgery. Scrubs and provides instruments, sutures, and other sterile supplies during surgical procedure. Participants in the training and orientation of surgical technology staff and students, as assigned. Is proficient to scrub on a minimum of two surgical specialties. The Cardiovascular Operating Room Surgical Technologist is responsible for assisting the physician with advanced tasks during surgical procedures which include cardiopulmonary bypass/heart-lung machine use, cardiac assistive devices, and vascular access and interventions. The CVOR ST must be able to work under high pressure in a fast paced environment. CORE FUNCTIONS 1. Prepares for surgical procedures. Pulls appropriate instruments and supplies and ensures good working order of instruments. Reviews case carts for correct instruments and supplies. Troubleshoots malfunctioning equipment and makes minor adjustments or calls biomedical equipment staff. Checks schedule and plans ahead for upcoming surgical case needs. 2. Anticipates the surgeon's needs. Passes instruments and retracts tissue. Maintains competency to scrub in a minimum of two surgical specialties. 3. Demonstrates the principles of aseptic technique and universal precautions throughout the procedure. Disposes of sharps and trash and places used supplies into case cart for processing. Participates in counting sharps, instruments and sponges. Prepares instruments for cleaning following each case. 4. Ensures that all surgeon preference cards and pick lists are accurate. 5. Assists with OR turnover between cases. Participates in stocking, replenishing supplies and cleaning operating rooms. 6. Participates in or leads the training and orientation of surgical technology staff and students, as assigned. 7. May provide business support to the department including administrative tasks. 8. This position follows safety procedures in regard to medication labeling, appropriate handling of specimens, appropriate handling of sharps, time-out procedure, radiation and laser safety, infection control, assembling and disassembling instruments. Participates in emergency call rotation. Is proficient to scrub on at least two surgical specialties. Internal customers are patients, surgeons, and nursing staff. External customers may include practicing physicians, patient families and vendors or sales reps MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS High school diploma/GED and current basic life support certification. Requires certification as a surgical technologist and one to two years of experience in a surgical technologist role OR three to four years in a surgical technologist role . Where applicable must be registered with State Regulatory Agency. This position must be able to scrub proficiently on a minimum of two surgical specialties. The position requires manual dexterity and the ability to maintain professional decorum in highly stressful emergent situations. Overview Job Title: Surgical Tech Department: Surgery-Hospital Reports to: Nurse Manager or RN Director Medical, Dental & Vision benefits paid by Employer! Compensation: Min $28.41 - Max $51.92 Schedule: Mon - Fri Hours: 0630-1500 Holiday A Rotation Call Rotation - Housing available when on call overnight. Definition of Position : Facilitates the operative or other invasive procedure by preparing and providing the required sterile instruments, supplies and equipment. Maintains the sterile field and anticipates and responds to the needs of the surgical team. Responsibilities Essential Job Functions : Preoperative Duties are as follows: Donning OR attire and personal protective equipment (PPE). Gathers, checks and opens supplies and equipment needed for the surgical procedure. Performs the surgical scrub, and donning gown and gloves. Sets up the sterile back table and Mayo stand with instruments, supplies, equipment, and medications/solutions needed for the procedure. Performs initial instrument, sharps and sponge counts with the circulator. Assists the team members with gowning and gloving. Assists with draping the patient and establishing the sterile field. Participates in the surgical site and patient verification during the time out procedure. Secures tubing, cords and other sterile accessories. Maintains sterile field and reports any contamination. Intraoperative Duties are as follows: Prepares and anticipates additional instrumentation, equipment and supplies for usage during the procedure. Anticipates the needs of the surgeon by passing instruments and supplies to surgeon during procedure. Labels, measures and passes medications, hemostatic agents and irrigation solutions utilized during the surgical procedure. Holds retractors or instruments as directed by the surgeon. Sponges or suctions on the operative site. Applies electrocautery to clamps or forceps on bleeders. Cuts suture material as directed by the surgeon. Coordinates the camera or changes out robotic arms/instruments during endoscopic surgery as directed by the surgeon. Maintains highest standard of sterile technique during the procedure. Performs additional counts as necessary. Prepares sterile dressings and/or immobilization devices. Prepares and passes off specimen(s) as appropriate. Cleans and prepares instruments for terminal sterilization. Assists other members of the team with terminal cleaning of room. Assists in prepping the OR for the next patient. Participates in debriefing and quality improvement practices to ensure quality patient care. Postoperative Duties are as follows: When SPD is unavailable, decontamination of instruments/equipment. Assist with post procedure cleaning of the operative or other invasive procedure room and prepare room(s) for subsequent patients. Other Duties are as follows: Maintain privacy and confidentiality of individuals and health information. Participate in ongoing educational and competency verification activities applicable to scrub person activities. Assist with stocking chores. The employee supports the hospital mission, vision, values, policies, and procedures. Participates in required education for DNV programs as applicable to position (reference program education curriculum). Performs other related duties as assigned.
