CORE JOB SUMMARY The Medical Assistant 1 performs multi-skilled tasks to assist the medical providers. The Medical Assistant 1 assists patients’ healthcare management and clinical procedures in a culturally competent manner utilizing evidence-based standards of quality, safety, and service. The Medical Assistant 1 provides hands-on care to patients while adhering to regulatory requirements, standards of care, and institutional policies and procedures, under the direct supervision and responsibility of a licensed physician. The physician in charge may delegate the tasks to oversee the MA 1 to a Nurse or Designee in charge of the unit/clinic. The incumbent adheres to ethical and legal standards of professional practice, recognize, respond to emergencies, and demonstrate professionalism. The role provides care within the philosophy, mission, vision, and values, as well as within the policies and procedures of the Department of Nursing and the University of Miami. As a professional, monitors the quality of care provided and nurtures a compassionate and healing environment. The Medical Assistant 1 works directly with the Nurse Manager/Nurse Supervisor/Charge Nurse and/or the Designee in charge of the Unit or Clinic to ensure a safe delivery of care that supports the UHealth mission. Ensures compliance with all State and Federal regulatory guidelines to include Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). 7. Performs professionally within their clinical scope of practice skills utilizing State, Federal, and University of Miami’s standards, guidelines, relevant statues, rules, and regulations. Incorporates protocols and standards of care into daily practice. 8. Accepts and provides focused constructive feedback and guidance with loving kindness in a manner that provides growth and maintains self-esteem. 9. Abides by the standards for ethical behavior, therapeutic communication and protecting the privacy of patient information. 10. Assists providers with physical examinations by preparing treatment/exam room with proper supplies, instruments, and materials, as directed. 11. Understands the importance of medical and surgical asepsis. Prepares patients for physician’s care with basic instruction and information regarding examination procedures. 12. Perform vital signs, EKG, phlebotomy, and document in patient’s medical record. 13. Cleans and/or sterilizes medical instruments while observing principles of sterile technique. Schedules patients for tests and completes required forms for laboratory work. 14. Maintains accurate and complete patient records and documentation. Job DutiesPrepares patient and equipment for exams/procedures and maintains exam rooms and clinical area. Performs medical history collection and medication refill, per protocol. Collects and prepares lab specimens/lab requisitions accurately and schedules and obtains authorizations for referrals and/or procedures. Identifies actual or potential patient risks and communicates those risks to the licensed nurse or provider upon recognition. Adheres to clerical, clinical, and EMR workflows. Performs clerical duties and provides front office support duties such as greeting and welcoming patients and providing excellent customer service both in-person and over the phone. Collects co-payments, schedules appointments, updates missing patient demographics, obtains referrals and pre-certifications. Uses patient centered care concepts in delivering care and performing related activities.Minimum QualificationsSpecialized Diploma as a Medical Assistant Ability to accept and adapt to constant change within a healthcare setting. Medical Assistant (Phlebotomist)

$18.75 - $21.25 / hour
The responsibilities of this job include, but are not limited to the following: Locating patients, obtaining accurate vital signs by visual and auditory measures, triaging patients, assessing patients’ medical condition, and preparing patients for physicals and medical treatment by Physicians and Nurses; Understanding and using the electronic medical record system; Ordering lab, x-ray, and medical supplies as directed; Notifying the Nurse and/or Physician when the patient is ready for exam while communicating symptoms and relaying questions about lab or x-ray needs; Assisting Nurses and Physicians with various forms of patient treatment and care; Handling Physician and Nurse requests with respect and in a timely manner; Performing lab duties as assigned; Performing phlebotomy procedures; Sterilizing and setting up instruments; Receiving and storing supplies; restocking treatment rooms as needed; Reporting to the Charge Nurse before leaving at the end of the shift; Following ancillary guidelines as deemed necessary by the Charge Nurse, Nurse Supervisor, DMS, and Physician; Adhering to established policies and procedures; Maintaining cleanliness of the treatment area and completing biological cleanup in accordance with OSHA guidelines and other maintenance assignments as directed; Washing, drying, folding, and restocking laundry; maintaining the cleanliness of the washing machine and dryer lint trap; Attending staff meetings as scheduled by the Nurse Supervisor or DMS; Operating, using, and maintaining medical and office equipment as trained; Completing assigned checklists and Policy Manager tasks within the assigned shift; Being available to assist as needed, as breaks and mealtimes may be interrupted at any time to provide necessary patient care or to maintain center operations; Fostering teamwork and ensuring a positive and professional atmosphere; Providing positive, warm, and friendly service in all interactions; Understanding and performing all duties as assigned. Minimum education and professional requirements include, but are not limited to, the following: Must be 18 years of age or older; Minimum typing experience; High school graduate or equivalent; Minimum of one year of clinical experience in a hospital or physician’s office preferred; Ability to hear pages, bells, and phone system; Ability to sit, stand, and walk for long periods of time (possibly 4 to 7 hours at a time); Ability to lift up to 50 pounds; Ability to attend scheduled CPR classes and code drills; Ability to prioritize and multitask; Willingness to work at any center due to a staffing or center emergency or reduction of work.
