Services / Surgery UTower CORE JOB SUMMARY The Nursing Assistant assists nursing service personnel with a variety of patient care activities and related services necessary in caring for the personal needs and comfort of patients. Additionally, the incumbent assists with personal hygiene, takes vital signs, and changes bed linens. The Nursing Assistant also serves and collects food trays, provides for in-between meal nourishment, and cleans, sterilizes, stores, and prepares other supplies. CORE JOB FUNCTIONS 1. Provides safe transportation of patients from their rooms to various areas of the hospital. Ensures patient safety by verifying the patient identification band, chart and sending slip. 2. Assists patients to and from the stretcher. 3. Assists nursing personnel with patient positioning and patient skin preps. 4. Cleans and prepares surgical suite and disinfects stretchers in-between patients. 5. Supports the supply needs of the department by receiving supplies and restocking all areas. 6. Maintains the cleanliness of the surgical suite and cleans the operating rooms at the end of the day’s schedule. 7. Empties all trash containers, suction canister boxes, and replaces bags and boxes, periodically throughout the day. 8. Maintains attendant’s supply room with needed solutions for cleaning, maintenance of floors, polishing glass, and cleanliness of counters and walls. 9. Maintains inventory of wet vacuum hoses, floor tools, and brushes. 10. Mops the floor between surgical procedures. 11. Cleans patient pantry and dining area and empties trash. 12. Returns equipment to the storage room and keeps the room orderly. 13. Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets. They will demonstrate necessary skills and knowledge to provide care for patients according to unit specific competencies as appropriate to the age of the patients served. Additionally, they will perform activities which support the daily functions and operations of a patient care unit and the healthcare team, and provide constant observation and documentation of activity of assigned patient. Works under the direction of the Registered Nurse in the assigned area. Essential Job Functions Provides basic patient care activities including vital signs, enemas and basic tests such as glucoscan, hemacult and multistix Assists patients with activities of daily living, as appropriate/assigned, using proper aseptic, isolation, and infection control techniques in performance of duties Assists patients with personal hygiene, ambulation and nourishment/fluids Completes procedures as assigned, such as collecting patient specimens and weighing patients. Assists with discharge and transfer preparation of patients Assists in the maintenance of the patient environment: makes patient beds, tidies patient room, and prepares patient room for admission and transfer Assists with the maintenance of supplies/equipment and the environment. Communicates and accurately documents activities onto the proper records or logs Initiates CPR and calls a Dr. Cart Performs receptionist duties for assigned area as requested Required Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent Must be listed on the IDPH Health Care Worker Registry (HCWR) as an Illinois CNA OR a nursing student who has passed the written competency exam and is listed on the HCWR. CPR/BLS Certification Ability to read and write, perform simple mathematical calculations, follow oral and written instructions, perform variety of tasks without direct supervision and perform duties requiring continuous physical effort Ability to effectively communicate verbally and/or in written form Ability to work in partnership with management and staff Occasional lifting may be heavy and awkward, over 50 lbs.
