Responsibilities Essential Functions • Endoscopic saphenous vein harvesting GSV, open vein harvest, GSV and LSV, radial artery harvest, open and endoscopically, open femoral artery/vein cannulation for bypass. • Invasive monitoring and placement of arterial and central venous lines, insertion and removal of thoracostomy tubes, insertion of central lines, including Swan-Ganz catheters, TLC, insertion and removal of IABP, removal of temporary pacer wires, insertion of arterial lines, NG/OG tube insertion, insertion of foley catheters, 1st assistant techniques. • Assesses patient health status including state of wellness, compliance with care plan and determines appropriate diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. May perform those routine medical treatments and diagnostic procedures for which they are qualified to perform by training and which fall within the normal scope of practice of the supervising physician. • Performance of histories and physical exams, pre and postoperative patient care, critical care, daily progress notes, obtain surgical consent, patient education, and discharge summaries. • Patient care in ICU including advanced knowledge of hemodynamic management, ventilators, and artificial cardiac devices. • First assist in surgery in all cardiac, thoracic and vascular procedures. Recognize serious, life-threatening emergencies, evaluate them appropriately and ensure patient receives prompt care to stabilize. Triages patient calls and evaluates patient problems. • Opening and closing of sternotomies, emergency opening of post op cardiac patient, emergency intubation, perform required would care under the direction of the CT Attending. • Educator and trainer for nurses, residents and fellows. • Participates in quality management and performance improvement activities. • Call coverage may be required specific to departmental needs. Overview The Registered Nurse (RN) provides nursing care to patients utilizing the nursing process and standards of practice for a professional nurse.
