Job Description The Clinical Registered Nurse (RN) II is responsible for managing individualized patient care by promoting and restoring patients' health in accordance with medical and nursing plans of care and established policies and procedures. The Clinical RN II collaborates with physicians and multidisciplinary team members in the development, execution, and evaluation of the multidisciplinary plan of care. The RN assumes a full patient assignment and can plan, analyze, intervene and set goals for patient care accordingly. This nurse provides nursing services to patients and families in accordance with the scope of the RN as defined by the Virginia Board of Nursing. This RN maintains a safe care environment for their patients (clients) and delivers quality care. Responsibilities Clinical - Assessment Conducts an individualized patient assessment, prioritizing the data collection based on the patient’s immediate condition or needs within timeframe specified by policies, procedures or protocols. Conducts ongoing assessments as determined by patient’s condition and/or the policies, procedures or protocols and reprioritizes care accordingly. Integrates nursing interventions into the multidisciplinary plan of care, incorporating appropriate standards of care and practice and patient outcomes. Clinical - Planning Develops, modifies, and integrates an individualized care plan which incorporates the medical plan of care, key elements from the plans of other disciplines, and standards of care and practice. Establishes individualized, measurable patient goals in consultation with the patient, family, and health care team. Clinical - Intervention Performs appropriate treatments as ordered by provider in an accurate and timely manner. Performs therapeutic nursing interventions as established by individualized plan of care for the patient and his/her family. Recognizes potential problems and responds to general information/data indicating urgent and/or emergent risk to the patient. Initiates emergency resuscitative measures as appropriate. Assumes responsibility and accountability for effectively managing the care of a specialty patient population. Provides care in a non-judgmental, non-discriminatory manner that is culturally sensitive to the patient and family, preserving their autonomy, dignity and rights. Collaborates with interdisciplinary team members to ensure patient care interventions are appropriate. Clinical - Evaluation Evaluates patient’s responses to care based on effectiveness of nursing interventions/actions in relationship to established goals. Initiates changes in the interdisciplinary care plan based on this evaluation. Problem solves with the specialty team to improve patient outcomes. Documents patient assessment findings, physical/psychosocial responses to nursing intervention and progress towards problem resolution. Clinical - Patient Education Identifies learning needs of patients/families and teaches by adapting standard information based on needs. Ensures that the patient/family demonstrates knowledge, within the abilities of the patient. Communicates with patients and family to identify their needs and include them in the plan of care. Acknowledges and supports determinations by the patient and/or family concerning treatment. Self and Peer Learning Assumes responsibility for assessing and meeting own learning and professional development needs. Maintains current competency in nursing specialty and requirements for department; attends required educational programs and may attend additional educational workshops; reviews nursing professional publications; establishes personal networks; may participate in professional societies. Seeks additional educational opportunities for clinical development and is either ready to learn the charge nurse role or currently functioning in a charge nurse role. Collaboration Makes sound judgments in the decisions involved in coordinating multiple, increasingly complex patient care demands. Job Summary Performs key responsibilities that support the department in achieving risk management program goals for the organization. Key duties include initiation and review of new claims in the Event Reporting System; grievances, complaints and concerns triage, review, and resolution, and general administrative support to the Risk Management Director. Works collaboratively with stakeholders including but not limited to: Risk Management, Claims, Legal, Patient Safety, Quality, Accreditation, Regulatory, and Licensing teams. Serves as a risk management generalist to facilitate and perform the duties of the risk management department on a variety of hospital and clinic related topics including collaboration and communication with various stakeholders, patients, and medical staff. Job Requirements Education and Work Experience: Bachelor's Degree in Nursing (BSN): Preferred Three years' nursing experience or general risk management: Required One year leadership experience: Preferred Familiarity with professional liability insurance/claims handling: Preferred Licenses/Certifications Registered Nurse (RN) licensure in the state of practice: Required Essential Functions Assists with identifying and managing actual and potential risks to the organization. Reviews and manages event reporting system related to grievances, complaints, workplace violence, security, property, facilities, and claims, and other events as assigned Participates in patient safety event review meetings and completes necessary follow up. Initiates review of events with high harm and potentially compensable events (PCEs). Acts as a liaison and resource to assess risk exposures in specific clinical and other situations (e.g. Facilities, Safety, Nursing, Pharmacy, Security, and Patient Relations). Works with Safety, Procurement, and Clinical Engineering and Clinical Operations to identify medical device and equipment failures for purposes of improving organizational risk, patient safety and for reporting to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Participates as member of varous organizational councils/committees to provide risk management perspective and input for purposes of managing organizational risk and promoting safety activities. Ensures timely and accurate response to inquiries for claims history and coverage information. Monitors evidence preservation (e.g. surveillance video, equipment, etc, and/or litigation holds). Collaborates with Risk Management Director or Manager, Claims team, or internal or external legal counsels to coordinate reviews processes and procedures. Obtains, maintains records and documents and provides them to internal or external legal counsels for preparation of testimony in pending litigation Safeguards documents obtained or developed for cause analysis to ensure documents/proceedings are protected from discovery. Participates in claims process which includes but is not limited to: coordination of depositions; response to interrogratories; requests for production of evidence; ensuring documentation and data management. Ensures timely and accurate response to inquiries for claims history and coverage information. Monitors evidence preservation (e.g. surveillance video, equipment, etc, and/or litigation holds) Attends trial as site representative as directed by internal and external legal counsels. Safeguards documents obtained or developed for cause analysis to ensure documents/proceedings are protected from discovery. Supports Risk Management Director and various department leaders in analyzing data (e.g. complaints, grievances, claims, lawsuits) to identify priority topics and audiences for targeted training and education. Assists department staff to coordinate inservices and education related to risk prevention, reduction, and mitigation strategies Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
