About this Job: General Summary of Position The Assistant Director of Ambulatory Nursing (ENT) is a member of MedStar Health entity-based Division of Nursing and leadership team. Supports and collaborates with the Director of Nursing in providing leadership and oversight for a specific unit(s)/office(s)/service line. Collaboratively manages the patient's transitions across the continuum of care to assist patients and populations in achieving or maintaining an optimal level of health and functioning.The Assistant Director of Ambulatory Nursing assumes administrative and leadership authority and responsibility for the assigned site/offices. Fosters associates' commitment to improving quality safety and cost-conscious patient care outcomes. Collaborates with the Director of Nursing in maintaining adherence to regulatory and accreditation standards and MedStar Health's policies and procedures. Primary Duties and Responsibilities In collaboration with the Director of Nursing develops site/office goals objectives policies and procedures and ensures compliance with entity policies and procedures clinical practice guidelines and regulatory and accreditation standards. Develops and maintains effective relationships and partnerships across disciplines (e.g. medicine) and departments (e.g. environmental services) to ensure the delivery of efficient and quality patient care services. Contributes to the efforts to ensures site/office activities and patient throughput proceed smoothly. In collaboration with the Director of Nursing develops standards of performance for associates evaluates performance and conducts performance management planning. Initiates or makes recommendations for personnel actions. Sets clear expectations for performance and holds associates accountable. Completes annual performance reviews of site/office-based associates in a timely manner. Ensures the reviews reflect the individual associate's ability to meet performance expectations and beneficial ongoing developmental goals. In the absence of the Director of Nursing/Senior Director of Nursing maintains communication with the VP and CNO MAS & MMG Medical Director providers other clinical leaders and personnel from other departments for the purpose of coordinating operations among the site/office clinical nursing division and entity. Contributes to the development implementation monitoring and management of the site/office-based budget and to support the organizational objectives patient care standards and quality of care. Demonstrates fiscal responsibility with day-to-day site(s)/office(s) productivity and operations. Ensures availability of necessary materials supplies and equipment for safe and optimal patient care delivery. Implements approaches and strategies that optimize patient care delivery and outcomes. Rounds on patients during the day for the purpose of engagement satisfaction and improvement in the care experience. Investigates and follows through on patient complaints and safety events. Supports and promotes quality and patient safety initiatives and high reliability standards. Leads site/office-based safety huddles. Escalates care delivery concerns to the Director of Nursing and other leaders as necessary and following the chain-of-command. Takes action to ensure optimal execution of the National Patient Safety Goals nursing sensitive indicators/measures regulatory requirements and other identified quality metrics. Identifies and participates in performance improvement opportunities as appropriate and based on findings. Collaborates with the Director of Nursing and Operations leader(s) in the hiring evaluation promotion and termination of personnel within the assigned site/office as needed. Initiates coaching and counseling of associates. Monitors and ensures appropriate staffing for site/office(s). Collaborates with other nurse leaders (Directors of Nursing Professional Development and others) to ensure associate competencies. Identifies individual staff development needs and provides appropriate resources to meet needs. Assists with developing orientation of newly hired associates and preceptor and resource clinical programs. Plans and coordinates the assessment of site/office-specific competencies for all clinical personnel within the site/office. Supports the implementation of new programs/practices and helps design educational programs that ensure the highest quality care delivery and customer satisfaction. Maintains continuing education files competency assessment documentation licensure and specialty certifications for self and the associates within the site/office. Maintains and demonstrates a professional patient-first atmosphere and an environment of coaching and development that supports shared decision making interdisciplinary collaboration and a high level of patient and associate satisfaction as evidenced by outcomes data. Provides shift-based clinical leadership through role modeling professional practice behaviors proper delegation of activities and management of the clinical team by maintaining staff accountability. Evaluates the need for and contributes to improvement in the professional practice environment. Participates in entity committees task forces interdisciplinary forums and projects (e.g. serious safety event reviews and performance improvement teams) at the request of Director of Nursing or Operation leaders. Promotes a public image of professional nursing excellence and represents the entity in community outreach efforts as appropriate. Minimal Qualifications Education Bachelor's degree in Nursing from a Nationally accredited program required and Master's degree in Nursing or a health related field from a Nationally accredited program preferred Experience 3-4 years 3-4 years of progressive nursing care experience required and 1-2 years leadership and management experience preferred Licenses and Certifications RN - Registered Nurse - State Licensure and/or Compact State Licensure Valid in the State of Maryland or District of Columbia - jurisdiction is dependent on the entity of employment. Upon Hire required and Specialty certification from a nationally recognized nursing organization in either a clinical specialty or Nursing Administration Upon Hire preferred and CPR - Cardiac Pulmonary Resuscitation (includes BLS and NRP) for healthcare providers from either the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross within 90 Days required and Additional unit/specialty certifications may vary by department or business unit. The responsibilities of this job include, but are not limited to the following: Locating patients, obtaining accurate vital signs by visual and auditory measures, triaging patients, assessing patients’ medical condition, and preparing patients for physicals and medical treatment by Physicians and Nurses; Understanding and using the electronic medical record system; Ordering lab, x-ray, and medical supplies as directed; Notifying the Nurse and/or Physician when the patient is ready for exam while communicating symptoms and relaying questions about lab or x-ray needs; Assisting Nurses and Physicians with various forms of patient treatment and care; Handling Physician and Nurse requests with respect and in a timely manner; Performing lab duties as assigned; Performing phlebotomy procedures; Sterilizing and setting up instruments; Receiving and storing supplies; restocking treatment rooms as needed; Reporting to the Charge Nurse before leaving at the end of the shift; Following ancillary guidelines as deemed necessary by the Charge Nurse, Nurse Supervisor, DMS, and Physician; Adhering to established policies and procedures; Maintaining cleanliness of the treatment area and completing biological cleanup in accordance with OSHA guidelines and other maintenance assignments as directed; Washing, drying, folding, and restocking laundry; maintaining the cleanliness of the washing machine and dryer lint trap; Attending staff meetings as scheduled by the Nurse Supervisor or DMS; Operating, using, and maintaining medical and office equipment as trained; Completing assigned checklists and Policy Manager tasks within the assigned shift; Being available to assist as needed, as breaks and mealtimes may be interrupted at any time to provide necessary patient care or to maintain center operations; Fostering teamwork and ensuring a positive and professional atmosphere; Providing positive, warm, and friendly service in all interactions; Understanding and performing all duties as assigned. Minimum education and professional requirements include, but are not limited to, the following: Must be 18 years of age or older; Minimum typing experience; High school graduate or equivalent; Minimum of one year of clinical experience in a hospital or physician’s office preferred; Ability to hear pages, bells, and phone system; Ability to sit, stand, and walk for long periods of time (possibly 4 to 7 hours at a time); Ability to lift up to 50 pounds; Ability to attend scheduled CPR classes and code drills; Ability to prioritize and multitask; Willingness to work at any center due to a staffing or center emergency or reduction of work. Salary Range: $20.00 - $23.00, depending on experience. The Transplant IMC shares a floor with its own Surgical Transplant Intensive Care Unit (ICU), promoting seamless patient throughput between different acuities. This 28-bed unit has been recognized by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) with a BEACON Award for Excellence through 2026. Clinical Nurses on S42 provide expert care to acutely ill adults that are waiting for or have recently received a solid organ transplant (liver, kidney, pancreas, intestine) or have undergone other hepatobiliary surgeries (TACE, liver resection, Whipple). MedStar Georgetown is one of only six centers in the United States that perform intestinal transplants and averages over 100 liver transplants per year. At MedStar Georgetown we also perform kidney and pancreas transplants and serve patients regionally, nationally, and internationally. Additional medical diagnoses include end-stage renal disease, end-stage liver failure, hepatitis, chest pain, cardiac arrhythmias, sepsis, CHF, and GI bleeds. All beds are equipped to provide continuous cardiac and pulse oximetry bedside monitoring, and nurses are essential in managing high-risk medications and performing in-depth discharge teaching.
