The Registered Nurse (RN) utilizes the nursing process to provide safe, effective, and patient-centered care while maintaining professional accountability for assigned patients. The RN evaluates the effectiveness of care provided by other direct caregivers and coordinates patient care collaboratively with interdisciplinary teams. This position upholds patient rights, maintains confidentiality, and performs all duties in alignment with Mercy’s mission, values, and Service Standards. Position Details: We are a specialty procedural area for GI and Pulmonology procedures. We have 5 gastroenterologist and 4 pulmonologists. Our staff covers 2 procedural areas: the outpatient only- area in our physician’s plaza building and the hospital procedural area in the main hospital. Both locations have a pre/post unit. The hospital area serves high-risk outpatients, inpatient, and ED patients. Every nurse here trains and works in the 3 nursing roles: admitting nurse, circulating nurse (in the procedure room) and recovery/discharge nurse. We perform 50-60 procedures a day. Our shifts are 8 hours during the weekdays. Full time and Part time nurses also take some afterhours call usually consisting of 4 weeknights and one weekend in a 10-week period. Qualifications Education: Graduation from an accredited school of nursing. Knowledge of the principles and skills needed for nursing, care, examination, diagnostic and treatment room procedures. Knowledge of medications and their effects, patient education, principles to develop a self-care program, instruments and common safety practices. Licensure: Current valid state license. Certifications: CPR certification or obtain within 90 days of employment. Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities: Skill in assisting and performing a variety of medical treatments and procedures. Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations. Must be able to interpret, adapt and apply guidelines and policies. Must be able to communicate clearly and establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients, staff and the public. Basic computer terminal and keyboard skills, or the ability to learn these skills, in order to access information and enter clinical data. Position Summary The Registered Nurse – Cardiac Cath Lab reports to the Assistant Director, Cardiac Cath Lab and provides specialized nursing care for patients undergoing diagnostic, interventional, and electrophysiology procedures. This position is responsible for pre-procedure assessment and preparation, intraprocedural monitoring and support, post-procedure recovery coordination, patient and family education, and accurate documentation in accordance with nursing standards, regulatory requirements, and departmental protocols. The RN collaborates closely with cardiologists, advanced practice providers, technologists, anesthesia and procedural support teams, and other members of the cardiovascular care team to promote safe, efficient, high-quality, patient-centered care. Essential Position Responsibilities Perform comprehensive nursing assessments for cardiac catheterization, interventional cardiology, electrophysiology, and related cardiovascular procedures, including review of history, medications, allergies, laboratory results, procedural risk factors, and readiness for sedation or intervention. Provide safe, evidence-based nursing care across the pre-procedure, intraprocedural, and post-procedure phases, including patient preparation, vascular access site assessment, medication administration, procedural monitoring, recovery care, and discharge readiness. Monitor hemodynamic status, cardiac rhythm, vital signs, level of consciousness, oxygenation, pain, and overall patient response during and after procedures; promptly identify changes in condition and communicate concerns to the procedural physician or appropriate provider. Assist with emergency response in the cardiac cath lab, including STEMI activations, arrhythmia management, procedural complications, rapid clinical deterioration, and other urgent cardiovascular events in alignment with ACLS standards and department protocols. Administer and monitor medications, anticoagulants, antiplatelet therapy, contrast-related interventions, moderate sedation support, reversal agents, and emergency medications within scope of practice and organizational policy. Maintain sterile technique and infection prevention standards while supporting procedural setup, patient positioning, room turnover, equipment readiness, and safe workflow in collaboration with cath lab technologists and procedural team members. Complete timely, accurate, and thorough documentation of assessments, interventions, medications, procedural events, patient response, education, handoff communication, and discharge instructions in the electronic medical record. Educate patients and families regarding procedure expectations, post-procedure care, access site precautions, activity restrictions, medications, follow-up instructions, and symptoms requiring medical attention. Participate in departmental quality, safety, regulatory readiness, competency validation, call coverage, and process improvement activities that support high reliability, patient safety, and efficient cardiovascular service delivery. Qualifications Education: Must be a graduate of an accredited nursing program Licensure and Certifications: Current Arkansas Registered Nurse license, required. CPR/BLS required. ACLS required within 90 days of hire. Annual dysrhythmia competency required. Additional department-specific competencies, including moderate sedation, radiation safety awareness, and cath lab procedural competencies, must be completed as assigned. Experience: Previous nursing experience in cardiac cath lab, critical care, emergency services, procedural services, cardiovascular services, or a comparable high-acuity setting preferred. Work Environment : This position has exposure to body fluids, radiation, and communicable disease. This position spends the majority of time standing and/or walking of short distances, with frequent pushing, pulling, and lifting of up to 100lbs as well as occasional carrying of up to 25 lbs. Verify whether documentation, coding, or completed services support closure of identified gaps, and flag discrepancies for correction. Maintain accurate, up-to-date tracking of audit findings and closure status by clinic and provider panel. Identify documentation or workflow patterns contributing to recurring open gaps and report trends to Practice Transformation leadership. Root Cause Analysis Support Assist in gathering data and chart-level detail to support root cause analysis of quality gaps, missed measures, or process breakdowns. Participate in root cause analysis discussions with the Practice Transformation and clinical operations team, contributing frontline and chart-level context. Help document findings and proposed corrective actions from root cause analysis reviews. Support tracking of corrective action follow-through to confirm identified issues are resolved. Patient Outreach – Care Gap Closure & Care Coordination Conduct patient outreach (phone, MyChart, or mail) to close identified care gaps and schedule needed services. Educate patients on the purpose and importance of recommended screenings, visits, or services tied to open care gaps. Identify and address barriers to care (transportation, scheduling conflicts, insurance, health literacy) and connect patients with appropriate team members for resource referral. Coordinate with referral sources, specialists, and community resources to support timely closure of care needs. Document all outreach attempts, outcomes, and follow-up actions accurately and timely in Epic. Episodic Care Management & Post-ED Outreach Identify patients with recent Emergency Department visits through ED notifications, Epic reports, or care team referrals. Conduct timely post-ED outreach to assess patient status, understanding of discharge/ED instructions, medication or follow-up needs, and risk for recurrent ED use. Coordinate scheduling of needed follow-up appointments with the PCP or appropriate specialist. Provide short-term episodic care coordination support for patients with acute or transitional needs outside the standard care gap workflow. Escalate urgent clinical concerns identified during outreach to the LPN Care Coordinator, RN Care Manager, or supervising provider. Document all post-ED outreach and episodic care coordination activity in Epic in accordance with program requirements. Qualifications Required Active Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) or Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) certification in good standing or the ability to obtain within 6 months of employment. Prior experience in a clinical, medical assistant, or care coordination role. Working knowledge of electronic health record systems (Epic preferred). Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to engage patients empathetically by phone and in writing. Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple concurrent audits, outreach lists, and program requirements. Preferred Experience with quality measure programs such as HEDIS, ACO, or Collaborative. Familiarity with chart audit processes and root cause analysis methodology. Experience supporting quality improvement or practice transformation initiatives. Core Competencies Attention to detail in chart review and documentation accuracy.
