Provide training to staff members including universal precautions, infection control, and medication administration. Serve as liaison and advocate with other medical and professional service providers as well as work with external agencies to coordinate services and ensure consistent treatment of individuals receiving care. Provide training for individuals served with topics including self-medication, prescribed treatments, sex education/STD prevention, and smoking cessation. Patients with injuries that are stable but require ongoing close monitoring are admitted to this unit directly from the ED or the Ross Trauma Admitting Area. Patients are also admitted to the unit as they are downgraded from the Trauma/Surgical ICU or the Trauma Step-Down Unit. Patients usually cared for in this area include those with traumatic brain injuries, spinal cord injuries, rib fractures and lung injuries, as well as diverse orthopedic injuries requiring frequent monitoring and care. The unit is staffed with registered nurses, critical care technicians, trauma surgery nurse practitioners and resident physicians. Staff also work closely with respiratory therapy and specialized surgical groups such as orthopedics and neurosurgery. Nurses and critical care technicians working in this area receive education specific to the care of the trauma patient.
