Position Objective: Contributes to the provision of high-quality, cost-effective health care through the direct care of patients and in collaboration with other members of the health care team. Understands self-motivation in performing basic nursing care. Participates in the team nursing concept, completing tasks as delegated by the assigned nurse. Initiates and maintains all types of safety measures and comfort care to patients. Assists with admission of patients by greeting and performing initial weight measurement, vital signs, disrobing as necessary and orientation of patient to room and equipment. Prioritizes discharge of patients by assisting with dressing, gathering belongings and transport if necessary to lobby; removes equipment and supplies from room for environmental staff cleaning. Participates in patient care, vital signs, intake and output and other data collection and records according to policy and procedure; obtains specimens as requested using approved procedure. Assists patients with mobilization and/or positioning as ordered by physician or unit protocol. Recognizes and reports pain, patient complaint or obvious change in patient condition to assigned nurse. Participates in the orientation of new staff acting as mentor when necessary and requested. Transports medications, as necessary during the usual course of transporting patients within the institution, in keeping with policy and procedure regarding medication security. Ensures that medication is delivered to persons authorized to handle medication according to AAMC policy. Maintains adequate levels of supplies and equipment on the unit. Transports patients in accordance with established safety policies. Processes written medical staff orders in accordance with established policy and procedure; communicating STAT or urgent orders to the care provider. Educational/Experience Requirements: High School Diploma or GED One year of experience as a CNA in acute care setting preferred. If serving as a bilingual/multilingual interpreter, certification in Medical Interpretation is required to perform the duties of a qualified interpreter Required License/Certifications: Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) American Heart Association HealthCare Provider BLS Working Conditions, Equipment, Physical Demands: There is a reasonable expectation that employees in this position will be exposed to blood-borne pathogens. How you make a difference The Certified Nursing Assistant performs basic and specialized nursing care functions under the supervision of licensed nurses. They adhere to local and regulatory policies and procedures to ensure proper patient care. The Nursing Assistant collaborates with other healthcare team members and correctional officers to plan and implement patient care activities in a correctional setting. After a general orientation to medical-surgical and psychiatric patient care areas, they may also float between units to ensure adequate nursing staff for patient care areas. Key Responsibilities Provides basic nursing care to patients under the direction of a licensed nurse, including assistance with ADLs, vital sign measurement, and accurate documentation of patient data. Maintains professional behavior and prioritizes work flow to ensure completion of all assigned duties, while adhering to policies and procedures and promoting patient safety and confidentiality. Collaborates with other members of the health care team, participates in staff meetings and training sessions, and notifies the licensed nurse of any patient concerns or issues. Demonstrates basic knowledge of nursing procedures and proficiently uses medical supplies and equipment, while also ensuring their proper storage and cleaning. Performs other duties as assigned by the supervising nurse, such as assisting with patient care in different units and participating in the orientation of new staff members. Qualifications & Requirements Education High school diploma or equivalent required. Completion of training course for Nursing Assistants. Experience Work requires level of knowledge of basic patient care methods, procedures, and techniques. Ability to handle a variety of simple tasks that are routine in nature, while keeping work flowing in an orderly manner. Must have the ability to pass a background check and drug screen. Must be able to pass and maintain clearance for a Public Trust Position, if working with specific patients. Ability to express thoughts logically, in English, in both written and verbal form. Ability to use computers and the typical software such as Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint and various database systems. Licenses/Certifications Current certification in the state of practice is required.
