The Cardiac ICU provides subspecialty care for critically ill patients with congenital, acquired cardiovascular or related diseases. The 26-bed unit integrates the latest technology in a family friendly environment. The multidisciplinary team is dedicated to improving outcomes for children through innovation and research. The CICU staff includes an integrated cardiac team with all sub-specialists readily available and accessible. The unit-based staff includes a dedicated pharmacist, respiratory therapist, social worker, nurses, as well as physicians from the divisions of anesthesiology, critical care medicine, cardiology and cardiac surgery. Children’s CICU is home to an Extracorporeal Life Support Organization (ELSO) center of excellence for ECMO services in children. The CICU also has VAD (Ventricular Assist Device) and heart transplant programs. The Telehealth Command Center in our CICU uses cutting-edge technology to keep continuous watch over the most fragile patients. It offers collaborative communication to help monitor, predict and prevent major events such as cardiac arrest. About The Role A Registered Nurse in the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (CICU) at Children’s National Hospital provides highly specialized care for critically ill infants and children with congenital, acquired, and complex cardiovascular conditions. Working within the region’s only Level IV Pediatric ICU and specialized CICU, nurses monitor and manage patients requiring advanced therapies such as ECMO, ventricular assist devices (VADs), and heart transplantation support. They collaborate closely with a multidisciplinary team of physicians, pharmacists, respiratory therapists, and social workers to deliver family-centered care, utilize advanced monitoring technology, respond to emergent changes in patient condition, and support innovative treatments that improve outcomes for some of the hospital’s most medically fragile patients. All nursing practice is based on the legal scope of practice, national and specialty nursing standards, Children's National Policies and Procedures, and in accordance with all applicable laws and regulations. Department 10307 Pediatric Intensive Care Unit Pay Range $33.08 - $60.18 Job Description Summary $25,000 Bonus with a 3-year Commitment Day Shift / Night Shift Rotation Weekend and Holiday Rotation Who We Are The Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) is a 46-bed unit. We will be expanding to 60 beds in 2027! This unit serves as a regional referral center and is a designated Level I Trauma Center for comprehensive care to pediatric patients and their families. The PICU Patient Care Management Team coordinates interdisciplinary patient assessment and patient care and provided by pediatric intensivists and specialty nurses in conjunction with multiple specialty services within the Medical Center. Patients are admitted to the PICU from the ED, Trauma Services, the Operating Room, and transfers from in-house units as well as transports from other institutions via the Pediatric Transport team. Trauma patients comprise about 10%-15% of patients in the PICU. These patients often have multiple injuries or severe head trauma. The PICU is also a Pediatric Burn Center and receives referrals from the region. Other complex patients requiring general surgery, ENT, craniofacial, neurosurgical and other surgical subspecialties are also cared for in the PICU. Medical patients comprise 50%-60% of patients and include children with respiratory failure, meningitis or seizures, sepsis, multi-system organ failure and chronically ill children. Children with cancer also require PICU care for complications that develop as part of the underlying disease, chemotherapy or following bone marrow transplantation. Services are provided daily, 24 hours per day. The Division of Critical Care Medicine (CCM) provides services and care to all patients admitted to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU). Specifically, care is provided for all patients in the PICU, patients within the hospital by request, patients within the hospital as part of all emergencies and resuscitations, and patients in the ED for “medical alerts” and “trauma stats”. The scope of services includes resuscitation, life support, monitoring and treatment for life threatening events and diagnostic issues related to these items. Patients may be admitted to and discharged from the PICU based on pre-established guidelines. See section on critical care units. Department 10136 Primary Care Shepard Park Pro Pay Range $110,052.80 - $183,414.40 The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) is credential by the medical staff and functions within their scope of practice in their jurisdictional area and in accordance with organizational medical staff bylaws. They are responsible for providing evidenced-based care for the management of patients, including assessment, implementation and evaluation of a detailed plan of care, which incorporates diagnostic and therapeutic interventions. The APP demonstrates competency in providing age-appropriate care to patients as defined by certification and training and provides family centered care to meet family needs, including psychological support, education and discharge planning in conjunction with other related disciplines. The APP initiates, participates and collaborates with divisional and organizational multi-disciplinary staff to provide and support evidence-based education, quality improvement and research. They participate in professional and organizational activities that contribute to improving patient care, the scientific knowledge base of advanced practice, program operation, and individual professional development. The APP provides leadership within their respective clinical area through participation in division projects and mentorship of others. Performs procedures as needed after obtaining appropriate credentialing. Participates in and/ or leads multidisciplinary patient care. Is a clinical resource for patient, parents and the interdisciplinary team. Appropriately communicates and escalates clinical/administrative issues. Collaborates with nursing, medicine, and other members of the healthcare team to regularly ensure quality patient care. Administrative Serves as a clinical preceptor to NP, CNS or PA students. Acts as a clinical resource for staff in patient care issues. Provides formal/informal educational presentation to staff on areas of expertise. Participates and leads quality improvement initiatives in their department. The disclosed salary range includes the minimum and maximum rates within which Children’s National believes an individual’s base pay rate will fall for this position.
