Surgical Technologist - UMMC West Bank

Job Overview Fairview has an immediate opening for a Surgical Technologist for the Operating Room at our M Health Fairview University of Minnesota Medical Center - West Bank and M Health Fairview Masonic Children's Hospital locations in Minneapolis, MN. This is a 0.6 FTE (48 hours per two week pay period), benefits-eligible opening on the weekend shift, Saturday and Sunday 12 hour day shift, 0700-1900. As a Surgical Technologist, you’ll assist in surgical procedures by preparing the operating room, arranging, and passing instruments to surgeons, and ensuring a sterile environment under the guidance of a Registered Nurse. You’ll play a crucial role in supporting the surgical team and maintaining the safety and efficiency of the operating room. About our OR at UMMC West Bank: We are a teaching hospital affiliated with the University of Minnesota and in turn has students, residents, fellows placed in this OR daily. The West Bank has 15 operating rooms, 1 EP Lab, and 1 Cath Lab. We are performing an average of 36 cases per day. High Volume Ortho/Spine/Oral (mainly adults), Peds CV-Hearts/Cardio Thoracic Peds, Neuro/Generals/Urology/Bariatrics, Peds Transplant, Adult Urology, Benign GYN, ENT/Eye/Plastics, Peds Dental, Robotic DaVinci. We provide innovative surgical suites for adult and pediatric patients needing surgical intervention. We are currently renovating additional ORs to complement the existing 4 larger ORs, as well as creating new locker room and OR storage space. Our strong team is continuing to grow even stronger as we offer cross service training under the guidance of our scrub tech supervisor and scrub tech educator. Performs the functions of a surgical technologist as a scrub person during surgical procedures providing patient care services appropriate to the age of the patients (ages pediatric through geriatric) served during the shift of duty in collaboration with the RN. Is responsible for adhering to standards of nursing practice and patient care, correct use of supplies/equipment and maintenance of the surgical suite under the direction of an RN. Responsibilities Serves as scrub person during operative procedures Anticipates surgeon’s needs Supplies appropriate instruments, suture, and specialty items. Maintains aseptic technique during all sterile procedures. Assures proper identification and handling of specimens. Completes all required sponge, sharps, and instrument counts. Practice Details: Provide inpatient care for critically ill patients in a hybrid role between an intensive care unit and as a critical response provider. While working on the MHealth Fairview Critical Care system APP team you will get a variety of experiences. Though always the potential to float between ICU services (including University SICU or MICU, FSH Med/Surg ICU and West Bank ICU), each APP has a primary ICU they are assigned for the majority of their FTE. There is a strong interdisciplinary culture on all the critical care services whether they are at the teaching hospital or one of the non-teaching services. In either environments, you will be working closely with academic Critical Care physicians and an experienced group of Advanced Practice Providers, caring for patients with a diverse range of urgent and emergent needs. In addition, approximately 30% of our shifts are responding with the West Bank Rapid Response team. As a critical response provider you will provide urgent and emergent response and evaluation for treatment of adult patients throughout the University of Minnesota Medical Center - West Bank, including inpatients (primarily orthopedic, med/psych and maternal), acute/transitional rehabilitation patients and inpatient psychiatric patients. You will be working autonomously with telephone support and collaboration from critical care attendings who are not on site. You will make rapid assessment and treatment decisions in accordance with American Heart Association, Neurocritical Care Society and current standards of care. You will consult specialists as appropriate, and determine and facilitate patients receiving appropriate level of care. Our unit cares for many patients with heart failure and cardiac arrythmias needing IV drips. We prepare and recover our patients for stress tests, echocardiograms, and cardiac procedures including diagnostic angiograms/stent placement, ablations, pacemakers and ICD insertions, and open heart surgery. Our unit cares for many patients with heart failure and cardiac arrythmias needing IV drips. A member of the interdependent team led by a designated RN, is accountable to perform patient care duties and activities for a group of patients.
