The Registered Nurse (RN) at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute provides evidence-based oncology nursing care across inpatient care units. The RN is responsible for conducting comprehensive assessments, developing care plans, and ensuring the safe administration of chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and supportive therapies. Additionally, the RN is involved in symptom management, patient and family education, and coordinating care within the interdisciplinary team. Primary Duties And Responsibilities Deliver direct oncology nursing care, including comprehensive assessment, individualized care planning, symptom management, and evaluation of patient outcomes for adult oncology patients and families. Administer antineoplastic agents and supportive therapies per protocols and ONS standards; verify orders, complete independent double checks, and monitor for and manage infusion reactions and adverse events. Manage central venous access devices (e.g., ports, PICCs); perform access, maintenance, blood draws, and blood product transfusions per policy; ensure safe use of infusion equipment and PPE. Provide patient and family education on diagnosis, treatment plans, self-care, side-effect management, and discharge instructions; coordinate multidisciplinary resources and community referrals. Document care in Epic in accordance with regulatory and institutional standards; maintain accurate medication administration records, flowsheets, and patient education documentation. Participate in quality and safety activities (e.g., safety huddles, infection prevention, hazardous drug handling, Joint Commission readiness) and support clinical research protocols as applicable (e.g., protocol adherence, specimen handling, adverse event reporting). Provide pre procedural instructions, providing the patient with opportunity to ask clinical questions without requiring separate call back. Create patient specific premedication regiment in collaboration with procedure APP. Obtain IV access and preprocedural lab work. Administered preprocedural procedural medications, titrating according to specific patient needs. Also administer chemotherapy and performs procedures safely and efficiently in accordance with Institute policy. May administer blood transfusions. Work as co-sign to Intrathecal Chemotherapy administered by APP. Assists in emergency nursing procedures necessary for prompt control of changes in patient`s physical condition. Keeps abreast of changing techniques in procedural nursing and maintains a high level of expertise in critical care. Responsible for intraprocedural monitoring of patients not limited to maintain active airway, assesses effective circulation and respiration via capnography and telemetry monitoring. Safely recover patients post sedation, perform discharge teaching, and evaluate safety of patient discharge. Coordinate correct research specimen collection with research coordinators. Responsible for the planning, delivery and management of direct patient care utilizing the nursing process and adhering to the standards of nursing practice. I. Major Responsibilities: 1. Utilizes the Nursing Process for the delivery and management of patient’s care from Admission to Discharge, appropriate to the developmental age of the patient population. 2. Assists physician with treatment and procedures and special tests as required or directed. 10. Participates in and supports Nursing Governance activities. 11. Assumes responsibility for professional growth. Assists in education and development of staff. 12. Participates in performance improvement initiatives and demonstrate the use of quality improvement in daily operations. Standard Staffing Level Responsibilities: 1. Position Qualifications: License/Certification/Education: Required: 1. Current Massachusetts Nursing licensure and registration. 2. BLS is a requirement for every RN unless advance cardiac life support (ACLS) certification is current, in addition to any unit specific certifications and competencies. Preferred : 1. Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing highly preferred. Experience/Skills: Required: 1. Thorough knowledge of the discipline of Nursing. Unless certification, licensure or registration is required, an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed in this description may be substituted for the above requirements. Department-specific competencies and their measurements will be developed and maintained in the individual departments. The competencies will be maintained and attached to the departmental job description. Responsible managers will review competencies with position incumbents. III.
