Position Title Registered Nurse, Labor and Delivery Job Description Summary The VHC Health Labor and Delivery Unit consists of 16 private rooms with bathrooms (all bathrooms include a shower which can be quite helpful for long inductions or natural labors). Twelve out of the sixteen labor rooms were renovated in 2021. This unit also has six triage rooms, three ORs and five antepartum rooms. In addition to the recent unit updates, this team utilizes the most current evidence based supplies & products. Nursing leadership has brought in many new products in the last few years. In this unit, you will see women with many different types of pregnancies, singletons, twins & even triplets! VHC Health is Kaiser Permanente’s premier center for their high-risk patient population, including antepartum patients, high-risk vaginal, external cephalic versions (where breech babies are rotated to vertex in hopes of having a vaginal delivery), TOLACs (Trial of Labor after Cesarean birth) and cesarean deliveries. Minor GYN cases such as D&C’s, LEEPS, IUD insertion/removal are also performed on week days. What makes the Labor and Delivery unit unique is the fantastic doctor/nurse relationship, great teamwork and having an OR/GYN team that works alongside labor nurses to support the unit. Members of this team describe the unit as “feels like family” and mentioned they have a very supportive leadership team who jumps in, scrubs up, and helps when needed. Since this unit sees many high-risk deliveries, it is a great place to learn about L&D, especially if you are a new graduate or a new to practice nurse. PRN | Rotating Shifts The American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN) previously awarded the Children's National Pediatric Intensive Care Unit with a silver-level Beacon Award for Excellence. The three-year award marked an important milestone on the path to exceptional patient care and achieving a healthy work environment. The silver-level designation signifies continuous learning and effective systems to achieve optimal patient care and shows alignment practices with AACN's six Healthy Work Environment Standards. The Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) is a 46-bed unit. We will be expanding to 60 beds in 2027! This unit serves as a regional referral center and is a designated Level I Trauma Center for comprehensive care to pediatric patients and their families. The PICU Patient Care Management Team coordinates interdisciplinary patient assessment and patient care and provided by pediatric intensivists and specialty nurses in conjunction with multiple specialty services within the Medical Center. Patients are admitted to the PICU from the ED, Trauma Services, the Operating Room, and transfers from in-house units as well as transports from other institutions via the Pediatric Transport team. Trauma patients comprise about 10%-15% of patients in the PICU. These patients often have multiple injuries or severe head trauma. The PICU is also a Pediatric Burn Center and receives referrals from the region. Other complex patients requiring general surgery, ENT, craniofacial, neurosurgical and other surgical subspecialties are also cared for in the PICU. Medical patients comprise 50%-60% of patients and include children with respiratory failure, meningitis or seizures, sepsis, multi-system organ failure and chronically ill children. Children with cancer also require PICU care for complications that develop as part of the underlying disease, chemotherapy or following bone marrow transplantation. Services are provided daily, 24 hours per day. The Division of Critical Care Medicine (CCM) provides services and care to all patients admitted to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU). Specifically, care is provided for all patients in the PICU, patients within the hospital by request, patients within the hospital as part of all emergencies and resuscitations, and patients in the ED for “medical alerts” and “trauma stats”. The scope of services includes resuscitation, life support, monitoring and treatment for life threatening events and diagnostic issues related to these items. Patients may be admitted to and discharged from the PICU based on pre-established guidelines. See section on critical care units. The department utilizes a multi-disciplinary approach to care, utilizing the services of physicians, nurse practitioners, nurses, respiratory therapists, social services and other support services necessary to provide quality care. Attending physicians providing care are board eligible or certified in Pediatric Critical Care. The PICU provides CAT (Rapid Response Services) and Code Blue team leadership to support in house clinical emergencies. An attending or fellow along with an ICU nurse and Respiratory Therapist respond to assist in clinical rescues of in-house patients. This service can also be activated by a concerned parent. Observe, report, and document symptoms and conditions of residents for changes in condition such as skin, behavior, alertness, weight, diet, and participation in activities. Attend daily Cross Over meetings by the lead care manager. Notify supervisor and resident care director if a resident has increased care needs. Inform supervisor of any resident changes in condition. Respond to security system and resident call bells promptly and immediately. Take appropriate action including resetting call bells. Greet guests, family members, residents, and team members. Answer, direct and/or respond to phone calls in a timely, courteous, and professional manner. Assist with continence management and dispose of all continence products properly to ensure sanitation of resident suite and community restrooms using standard care procedures. Communicate with families and is a resource as needed. Help residents maintain independence and physical safety and promote dignity of each resident adhering to the standards of Resident Rights and Sunrise Principles of Service. Participate/lead and assist residents with activities of daily living (ADLs) and Invite, Encourage, and Assist (IEA) residents to participate in activities as indicated on the ISP. Engage residents in life skills and other life enrichment activities throughout the day in reminiscence. Strive to understand and respond to each resident with empathy, always remaining mindful of the resident’s unique communication patterns or history and basic human needs. Maintain an atmosphere of warmth, personal interest, and positive emphasis as well as a calm environment. Ensure the established safety regulations are always followed. Practice routinely good Standard Care Precautions of cleanliness, hygiene, and health. Host and engage in activities with the residents daily. Risk Management and General Safety Partner with community team to ensure community is in compliance with national/provincial regulations pertaining to occupational health and safety requirements, promoting Risk Management programs and policies, and adhering to safety rules and regulations. Practice safety procedures at all times including Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), fire extinguishers, Safety Data Sheets (SDS), and Lockout Tagout procedures. Report all accidents/incidents immediately. Reports all unsafe and hazardous conditions/equipment immediately. Ensure any cords, carts, equipment, and other hazards are always kept out of the way, not blocking exits, and in compliance with fire codes. Understand and practice the proper method of attending to and disposing of, and the possibility of exposure to, blood borne pathogens, bodily fluids, infectious waste, sharp sticks, and hazardous materials. Report occupational exposures to blood, body fluids, infectious materials, sharp sticks, and hazardous chemicals immediately. Ensure oxygen tanks are stored safely, exchanged when empty and monitored to make sure liters of oxygen are at prescribed levels. Housekeeping and Laundry Services Maintain and clean resident’s room as assigned including making beds, emptying trash, putting clothes away appropriately, spot sweeping, and mopping as needed. Wash resident’s laundry as noted in the ISP and as needed. Wash and fold dining room linens and napkins. Complete assigned housekeeping tasks. Maintain common areas in a clean and tidy manner at all times. Dining Service Serve meals in the dining room and work in the dining room as assigned. Promote and ensure a pleasant dining experience during all meals. Assist with dining room set up and clean up as assigned. Participate in pre-meal meetings. Follow residents’ diets as indicated on ISP and Confidential Diet Board/Chart. Observe, note, and document in daily log any resident changes in dining habits. Respond to the dining needs of the residents and guests while maintaining Sunrise hospitality and service standards. Provide room service delivery as needed. Practice safe food handling in compliance with universal care precautions at all times. Integrate the individual resident’s life skills into their daily routine. Blend a variety of multi-sensory experiences into the resident’s day. Participate in monthly letters home and letter writing with the residents and their families. Partner with the RCD and community team to promote infection control standards including any resident testing, training, and skills checks.
