Bargaining Unit PEF Job Summary The Department of Nursing at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University is seeking a full-time Registered Nurse 1, NS33 Medical ICU. The Registered Nurse 1 (T&RC) is a full performance level nurse position and possesses a license as a registered professional nurse in New York State; under the general direction of a higher level registered nurse or licensed health care provider, independently provides direct nursing care to individuals in accordance with Article 139 of the Education Law; supervises nursing care activities; and provides clinical supervision and training to Graduate Nurses (T&RC), Teaching & Research Center Licensed Practical Nurses, and direct care staff. Illustrative Duties Prepares or assists with preparation of nursing care plans consistent with individuals’ comprehensive treatment plans and medical needs. Carries out treatment procedures, administers medications, and monitors individuals’ conditions. Records notes and maintains individuals’ medical records and nursing care plans, including nursing care, medications, and treatments, reactions to care and treatment, intake and output of liquids and solids, and vital signs. Participates in the development, implementation, and revision of individual care plans as a member of a multidisciplinary treatment team. Modifies nursing care plans based on individual condition and responses to care and treatment. Triages individuals by inquiring about illnesses, injuries, and symptoms, and records findings and observations. Assesses findings, and either refers individuals directly to a physician in emergency cases or initiates appropriate remedial action; as directed, assists physicians with treatment functions. Provides education and counseling to individuals and families regarding health, medications, procedures, and treatment goals. Practices and ensures compliance with established infection control policies and procedures. May train paraprofessional staff by demonstrating nursing techniques and providing instructions on use of techniques and nursing equipment. Bargaining Unit CSEA Job Summary The Department of Nursing at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University is seeking a full-time Nursing Assistant 2, Float Team (Nights). Nursing Assistants provide care to individuals in hospitals and long-term care facilities operated by New York State. Care ranges from attending to patients’ personal hygiene needs, to performing a limited number of simple treatments and therapies under direction of licensed clinical staff. Incumbents provide direct hands-on care to individuals by assisting with bathing, dressing, perineal care, mobility, eating, and other daily living activities. Illustrative Duties Under direction of higher-level treatment staff, the Nursing Assistant 2 performs duties similar to those of a Nursing Assistant 1, but with greater proficiency. Positions may assist with training new staff in assigned treatment areas. Changes simple dressings as directed, gives enemas, douches, and irrigations as directed. Applies abdominal “T” binders, hot water bottles, aqua “K” pads, ice bags, and coolers, and hot and cold compresses to patients as directed. Assists patients in collecting urine and stool specimens. Observes and records patients’ quantitative food and fluid intake and waste output. Takes temperature, pulse rate, blood pressure and respiration rate. Gives therapeutic baths such as sitz and fever sponge baths. Measures and records height and weight. Inspects functioning oxygen therapy equipment including tents, masks, and cannulae to ensure appropriate functioning. Recognizes and reports abnormal signs and symptoms of common diseases and conditions to clinical staff. Applies splints, braces, slings and other self-help devices. Operates a variety of specialized patient monitoring and treatment devices. Attends to patients’ hygiene and daily living needs in order to maintain an atmosphere conducive to patient comfort and treatment. Examples include bathing and dressing patients, brushing teeth, and trimming nails. Collects and carries patients’ laundry and dry cleaning and delivers objects to appropriate locations in the health care facility. Receives patients’ belongings and transports objects to safe storage, keeping appropriate records. Feeds patients requiring assistance. As directed by clinical staff, moves, positions, lifts and transports patients using a variety of lifts and other aids in order to make patients comfortable, prepare patients for treatment, deliver patients to treatment areas, and to prevent contractures. Brings bedpans and urinals to patients requiring assistance and attends to incontinent patients. Talks and listens to patients and responds by encouraging patients to cooperate and participate in treatment activities. May transport patients and supplies on occasion. May perform a variety of limited housekeeping and cleaning duties related to direct patient care in order to ensure that treatment and patient areas are clean, sanitary, orderly, and properly supplied. Required Qualifications Non-Competitive: 1-year of satisfactory full-time experience in the provision of simple treatment and other patient care services under professional supervision. Possession of current certification as a New York State Certified Nursing Assistant may substitute for the required experience. The APN functions under a collaborative agreement with a physician and is responsible for ensuring safe, evidence-based withdrawal management, medication management, and coordination of care in compliance with New Jersey Department of Health (DOH) and DMHAS regulations. Essential Functions Clinical Care & Withdrawal Management Perform comprehensive medical assessments upon admission and throughout withdrawal management. Diagnose and treat substance withdrawal syndromes, including but not limited to alcohol, opioids, benzodiazepines, and stimulants. Develop, implement, and adjust individualized withdrawal management plans, including medication protocols. Prescribe, administer, and monitor withdrawal-related medications (e.g., benzodiazepines, clonidine, buprenorphine, naltrexone, supportive medications) in accordance with scope of practice and collaborative agreement. Utilize standardized withdrawal tools (e.g., CIWA-Ar, COWS) and document clinical decision-making. Medication Management Conduct medication reconciliation on admission and discharge. Ensure safe prescribing practices, medication monitoring, and adherence to program protocols.
