The Wellness Visit Medical Assistant (WVMA), under the supervision of a licensed practitioner, supports the first phase of a two-part Medicare Annual Wellness Visit (AWV). Following successful onsite training and competency validation, the position transitions to a primarily remote role conducting the initial visit via telehealth. The WVMA reviews preventive care needs and quality care gaps using approved protocols, obtain and documented patient-reported medications and medical histories, documents findings in the electronic health record (EHR), and prepares patients for the second portion of the visit, which is completed in person by a Nurse Practitioner. The WVMA is also responsible for patient outreach, scheduling, and collaborating with practitioners, Population Health, Coding, and clinic staff to improve quality outcomes, patient experience, and regulatory compliance.
