This provider will join a team of both physicians and APPs on a rotating 12-hour shift schedule that provides 24/7 care to critically ill medical patients at the Rush main campus. This opportunity will require an anticipated 12-14 shifts per month. APPs will work autonomously and in collaboration with Rush pulmonary/critical care attending physicians and fellows and will be required to perform a number of procedures including central line placements, paracentesis and temporary hemodialysis catheter placements, among other duties. Department/division specs There are more than 400 APPs employed across the Rush system. The AICU team is fully staffed with 9 APPs. We work closely with many departments (palliative care, hepatology, gastroenterology, infectious disease, etc.) as part of a multidisciplinary approach in the ICU. Duties & Responsibilities We require 12-14 shifts per month on a rotating basis. Some holidays and weekends will be required. The AICU is a 28-bed unit that is staffed by both medical and surgical ICU teams. This position is 100% inpatient. Preferred Qualifications Applicants with previous Advanced Practice Provider experience in the ICU is strongly preferred. Relevant RN experience may be considered. APRN Candidates will require Acute Care Certification. Position Summary The Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) works with the Community Outreach Intervention Projects (COIP) clinical programs to provide low-barrier primary care and substance use disorder at the various clinical locations. The APRN provides comprehensive health care for assigned patients/community as determined by scope of practice guidelines and specialty. This includes completion of a health assessment, determining diagnosis, planning and prescribing treatment within the parameters of medical staff privileges at UI Health and area of expertise. The APRN participates in the educational experiences of nursing students, medical students, residents and other health care disciplines. The APRN also will provide wound care to patients with injection-related wounds, provide guidance on long-acting injectable buprenorphine, and perform ultrasound-guided blood draws for people who inject drugs. THIS IS A PART-TIME 70% FTE POSITION. Duties & Responsibilities Manage the care of patients within assigned area and/or area of expertise and within parameters of medical staff privileges. Obtain relevant patient health history. Study and interpret patient tests and records. Perform physical exam and record findings. Perform various diagnostic, preventive and/or therapeutic procedures, and/or order special screenings and developmental or laboratory tests to diagnose conditions; interpret results. Prescribe/order appropriate pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic interventions and develop a treatment plan. Develop an educational plan for patient/family. Assist with scheduling of patients for upcoming procedures including coordinating with other services (division, departments) and completion of necessary documentation, scheduling forms and clearance. Order appropriate consultation/referral. Determine effectiveness of treatment plan with documentation of treatment provided and patient outcomes. Reassess and modify plan with patient/family and treatment team within the parameters of medical staff privileges. Provide services specific to people who use drugs, including providing wound care for patients with injection-related wounds, performing ultrasound-guided blood draws, and administering long-acting injectable buprenorphine and naltrexone treatment for opioid use disorder. Provide street outreach as part of the mobile unit team in areas with high overdose rates in Chicago. Participates in the educational experiences of nursing students, medical students, residents and other healthcare disciplines. By being involved in case conferences, serving as a preceptor and mentor, assisting with curriculum development and instruction. The Advanced Practice Nurse is required to have and maintain a faculty appointment in order to receive clinical privileges to practice at the University of Illinois Health System.
